St. Cloud State to send nine wrestlers to NCAA DII championships

The #1 St. Cloud State University wrestling team will be sending a total of nine wrestlers to the upcoming NCAA Division II championships on March 8-9 in Cleveland, Ohio. The defending NCAA DII team champions, St. Cloud State will be sending the largest number of wrestlers to the tournament in 2019 of any NCAA DII team.

St. Cloud State University will be sending the following wrestlers to the NCAA championships in 2019:

  • Brett Velasquez – 125 pounds
  • Garrett Vos – 133 pounds
  • Travis Swanson – 141 pounds
  • James Pleski – 149 pounds
  • Jake Barzowski – 157 pounds
  • Devin FitzPatrick – 165 pounds
  • Kolton Eischens – 174 pounds
  • Chance Helmick – 184 pounds
  • Vince Dietz – 197 pounds

A four-time national qualifier, Velasquez won the 125-pounds national title in 2016 and also gained All-America honors for the Huskies in 2017 and 2018. He brings a 20-3 overall record into the national tournament this season and recently won his 100th match at SCSU in the title match at the 2019 NCAA DII Super V Regional. He placed fourth at the NCAA championships in 2018 and third in 2017. Velasquez owns a 100-12 career record, which includes four NCAA regional titles during his collegiate career.

At 133-pounds, Vos will be making his first trip to the NCAA championships for the Huskies. A freshman, Vos owns an 18-2 record for SCSU this winter and most recently won the top spot in the 133-pound bracket at the NCAA DII Super V Regional tournament. Vos is ranked #10 in the current NCAA DII rankings.

Senior Travis Swanson is also making his first trip to the NCAA championships at 141-pounds. The NCAA Super V Regional champion in 2019, Swanson brings a 24-4 record and is ranked #6 going into the national meet.

At 149-pounds, James Pleski will be making his third trip to the NCAA finals. A runner-up at last year’s NCAA championships at 149-pounds, Pleski owns a 25-1 record this season and is currently ranked #2 in the nation. A two-time NCAA All-American at 149, Pleski placed fourth in 2017 and second in 2018. He is a two-time NCAA regional champion (2018 and 2019).

In action at 157-pounds, Jake Barzowski will be making his first appearance at the NCAA championships. Barzowski owns a 20-2 record this winter for the Huskies and is ranked #4 in the nation.

At 165-pounds, Devin FitzPatrick is ranked #11 in the latest NCAA polls and owns a 23-3 record this winter. He won the NCAA DII Super V regional title at 165-pounds in 2019 and will also be making his second trip to the NCAA DII championships this winter.

Kolton Eischens will also be making his second consecutive appearance at the NCAA championships in 2019. An All-American in 2018, Eischens placed sixth at the NCAA finals last winter in the 174-pound bracket. He is currently ranked #3 in the nation at 174-pounds and owns a 23-2 record this winter for the Huskies. Eischens won the 2019 NCAA Regional title at 174-pounds for the Huskies on Feb. 23.

At 184-pounds, Chance Helmick brings a perfect 14-0 record into the NCAA championships for the Huskies. The NCAA Regional champion at 184-pounds this year, Helmick is making his first trip to the NCAA tournament for the Huskies this winter. He previously qualified for the NCAA tournament with Chadron State before joining the Huskies in 2018. Helmick is ranked #4 in the latest NCAA polls at 184-pounds this season.

The SCSU national tournament contingent is completed by #1 ranked Vince Dietz at 197-pounds. Dietz has been impressive this year with a 28-0 record that includes 10 falls for the Huskies. The 2019 and 2018 NCAA Super V region champ at 197-pounds, Dietz finished as the runner-up at the NCAA championships in 2018 at 197-pounds. He owns a 110-16 career record with the Huskies and will be making his second trip to the NCAA tournament this season.

The 2015, 2016 and 2018 NCAA DII champs, St. Cloud State posted a 20-0, 8-0 NSIC record in 2018-19. The Huskies have won eight consecutive NSIC championships and they have not lost a dual meet since Jan. 14, 2017 (48 consecutive dual victories). SCSU has also won the NCAA DII Regional title in 2019, 2018, 2017, 2013, 2012 and 2011. At the NCAA championships, St. Cloud State has been impressive (see chart below) and the Huskies have also won NWCA DII National Duals championships in 2019, 2018, 2017, 2013 and 2012.
