Tournament in Cuba Awaits Pair of Former Gophers

Former Gophers All-Americans Jayson Ness and Brett Pfarr will compete at the Granma y Cerro Pelado Tournament in Havana, Cuba, on February 21-22. They will be accompanied by Minnesota Regional Training Center coach Dustin Schlatter, another former Gophers All-American and champion.

Ness, the Gophers all-time pin leader with 73, will compete in the 65kg weight class in his first competition since the World Team Trials mini tournament in May 2017. The 2010 NCAA Champion and Dan Hodge Trophy winner is ready to make all his hours of training at the Minnesota wresting facilities worth it with some time on the mat.

“I’m just excited because I haven’t competed since those trials so it’ll be fun to get back out there to compete,” Ness said.”It’s definitely cool to get down to Cuba, I’ve never been before.

Pfarr is looking to place on the podium for a second time after earning bronze at the Dave Schultz Memorial last month in his first senior event. The two-time All-American at 197-pounds will compete at the 86kg weight class in Cuba.

“We’re really looking forward to going to Cuba,” Pfarr said. “As my first international tournament I hope I get to wrestle some foreign wrestlers and get the feel for that. We hope for the best and we’ll wrestle hard.”
