Top three wrestlers in each weight class advance to nationals
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The Augustana wrestling team embarks on its postseason journey, traveling to Moorhead, Minn. for the Super Region ‘V’ Championships on Feb. 23. The regional will be held at Nemzek Hall on the campus of MSU Moorhead.
Super Regional ‘V’ is made up of the nine NSIC wrestling institutions and the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. The top three finishers in each weight class will advance to the NCAA Championships on March 8-9 at the Wolstein Center in Cleveland, Ohio.
During the 2019 dual season, the Vikings put together a 5-4 record with a 4-3 record in the NSIC. Augustana currently has two wrestlers ranked in their respective weight classes. Senior Lukas Poloncic (15-8 overall, 8-1 duals) is the No. 11 wrestler at 174 lbs., while senior Clayton Wahlstrom (26-11 overall, 8-1 duals) is No. 8 at 197 lbs. As a team, the Vikings are unranked but did receive eight points in the last poll.
In last season’s Super Region 3 Championships, Poloncic qualified for Nationals after taking fourth place at 174 lbs. with a 4-2 record. Wahlstrom finished just short of qualifying for Nationals in fifth place at 197 lbs.
Sophomore Brayden Curry (7-14 overall, 3-3 duals) is set to wrestle at 133 lbs. at the Super Region V Championships again for the Vikings after a 2-2 appearance at the event last season. Senior Colin Ayers (25-10 overall, 6-2 duals) brings additional experience from past Regional Championships after competing in the event in the 2015-16 season, going 0-2.
The Super Region V consists of some of the toughest competition in the country, with four ranked teams taking part in the event. No. 1 St. Cloud State headlines the group of ranked teams, with No. 17 Minnesota State, No. 19 Upper Iowa, and No. 22 U-Mary also providing stiff competition.
