MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead wrestling team wrapped up the 2018-19 season with two individuals qualifying for the national tournament in Cleveland, Ohio. It was the 10th season under head coach Kris Nelson.
The Dragons finished the season with a 2-10 overall record and a 1-4 conference record with wins over Minot State and Northern State. The Dragons nearly knocked off two ranked teams late in the season, losing to No. 19 Upper Iowa 18-15 and No. 10 Minnesota State 18-16.
Sophomore Cole Jones led the team with 29 wins, finishing 29-10 overall at 125. Redshirt freshman Evan Foster was 27-17 at 184 while Mason Schulz was 24-18 at 141. Freshman Braydon Ortloff was 19-14 at 157 while senior captain Adam Blees was 17-12 at 174.
Two Dragons qualified for the NCAA D2 National Tournament by finishing in the top three at the Super Region V Tournament. Sophomore Cole Jones took third at the regional tournament at 125 while redshirt freshman Jordan Magnuson finished second at 285 to punch his ticket to the national tournament.
Jones became MSUM’s first All-American since assistant coach Blake Bosch in 2017 with a seventh-place finish at 125 pounds at the national tournament in Cleveland. Jones finished the national tournament with a 3-2 record and a 29-10 overall record on the season to lead the Dragons in that category.
Jones was also an All-NSIC First Team selection at 125 pounds.
