Ayers and Wahlstrom Set Sights on NCAA Wrestling Championships

The tournament begins on Friday, March 8 and will run through Saturday, March 9

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Redshirt seniors Colin Ayers and Clayton Wahlstrom will be representing the Augustana wrestling team at the NCAA DII Wrestling Championships in Cleveland, Ohio. The tournament begins on Friday, March 8 and will run through Saturday, March 9 at The Wolstein Center.

Sessions I and II are set to take place on Friday with Sessions III and IV happening on Saturday. Session I will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday and will have the first round matches for all weight classes. Session II will start at 5 p.m. on Friday and will have the quarterfinals and the first and second rounds of the consolation brackets.

Session III will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday and will feature the semifinals, third round consolations, the consolation semis, and the third, fifth and seventh place matches. Session IV will begin at 7 p.m. and include the finals of the weight classes.

The top-eight finishers at each weight class will earn All-American honors.

Ayers qualified for nationals last week after winning the consolation finals. He took third place and went 3-1 on the day at 157 lbs. Ayers is slated to open up against the winner of Isaiah Diggs (11-6) Colorado St. -Pueblo and Gerogre McGuire (18-3) Gannon. The senior went 25-9 during the regular season with a 6-1 dual record.

The 157 lbs. bracket features two familiar faces in Jake Barzowski of St. Cloud State and Cortez Arredondo of Southwest Minnesota State.

At 197 lbs. Wahlstrom finished at 3-1 for a third place appearance at the Super Region ‘V’ Championships. The senior earned Second Team All-Conference honors last month after going 26-12 during the regular season with an 8-1 duals record at 197 lbs. Wahlstrom is slated to face off against Ethan Sherertz (17-6) of Maryville (Mo.).

The 197 lbs. bracket features two undefeated wrestlers in Vince Dietz (28-0) of St. Cloud State and Levi Niebauer (11-0) of Pitt. – Johnston. The bracket also features another familiar NSIC face in Nick Baumler (21-7) of Upper Iowa.
