Gophers Place Four on the Podium at 2019 NCAA Championships

PITTSBURGH- After finishing session five of the 2019 NCAA Championships, the Gophers wrestling team have concluded their tournament with four All-Americans placing in third, sixth, seventh, and eighth.

After the morning session, the Gophers (14-3, 7-2 B1G) sit in eighth place as a team with 53.5 team points. Last season the Maroon and Gold finished in 17th place.

Team scores will be finalized after the championships session Saturday evening.

Leading the charge was heavyweight Gable Steveson, who took home third place in his first career NCAA Championships. Steveson finishes the tournament as the highest placing true freshman in the country.

Against Maryland’s Youssif Hemida in the consolation semifinals, Steveson notched the first takedown in the second period to get on the board. From there the true freshman continued to stop Hemida’s attacks and even tacked on a late takedown to ensure the victory.

Steveson’s third place bout featured a rematch with Lehigh’s Jordan Wood after they met earlier this season at the South Beach Duals where Steveson came out on top. Steveson took an early lead with a first period takedown that included over two minutes of riding time, and cruised to third place from there.

At 141-pounds, Minnesota native Mitch Mckee dropped his first bout against Missouri’s Jaydin Eierman by 8-5 decision to fall to the fifth place bout. McKee then faced Penn State’s Nick Lee and was pinned in the second period to take home sixth place.

Still, McKee’s junior season ends as the most successful of his career as he earns his first career All-American honors.

When it came to Minnesota’s seventh place matches, the Gophers split with 133-pound Ethan Lizak winning and 174-pound Skatzka falling.

Lizak, in his final career match for the Gophers, took a 7-4 lead in the first period with a takedown and signature turns from the top position. Lizak kept the lead the same throughout the bout and added an additional point with nearly three minutes of riding time.

Lizak is the first three-time All-American for the university since heavyweight Michael Kroells.

Skatzka lost to Lehigh’s Jordan Kutler for the second time this season. Kutler scored the only offensive points and also notched the riding time.

The morning session packed 18,436 into the PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh.
