Jones Advances to Saturday, Magnuson Eliminated

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Minnesota State University Moorhead sophomore Cole Jones advanced to the second day of competition at the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships, ensuring himself All-American honors. Jones went 2-1 during Friday’s opening competition, which is taking place in Cleveland, Ohio.

Jones (28-8) opened the day with win over Marcus Povlick of McKendree 7-4 thanks to a late takedown in the third period. He followed with a tough match against Nebraska-Kearney’s Josh Portillo in the quarterfinals, falling 14-9.

Jones rebounded with a 10-6 decision over Jonathan Andreatta in the consolation bracket to advance to the second day of competition. He is guaranteed a top eight finish and All-American honors as a result of that win.

Jones will face Tyler Kreith (33-11) of Maryville in the consolation round on Saturday morning.

Magnuson (4-6) ran into a tough opening round draw — facing the top-seed Terrance Fanning of Wheeling Jesuit (24-2). Fanning prevailed 9-3, sending Magnuson into the consolation bracket.

The Valley City native saw his tournament end with a tough 2-1 loss to Logan Radik of Maryville in the consolation bracket.

A note about Magnuson — he also was a key member of the MSUM football team’s defense this past fall as the Dragons advanced to the Mineral Water Bowl. He got to compete in two postseasons during the 2018-19 year.
