MOORHEAD, Minn. — Minnesota State University Moorhead sophomores Cole Jones and Jordan Magnuson will compete at the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships which begin on Friday in Cleveland, Ohio. Both wrestlers are making their first trip to nationals.
Jones (26-8) will compete at 125 pounds. He will face the winner of the pigtail match between Gannon’s Jacob Dunlap (18-8) and McKendree’s Marcus Povlick (3-1). Jones has been ranked as high as fifth in the nation this season at 125 pounds.
”I’ve given everything I have to this sport. I make it a goal to work harder and be more disciplined than anyone else,” Jones said. “I believe in my training and I trust that my coaches have done everything they can to prepare me up to this point. I’ve proven that I can beat some of the best guys in the nation. So in my mind, there’s no reason I can’t make a strong run at a national title.”
Magnuson (5-5) who began his wrestling season in January after playing for the Dragon football team this past fall, will face top seed Terrance Fanning (23-2) of Wheeling Jesuit in the opening round.
“The goals I have going into this weekend is to be All-American and to wrestle the best I can,” Magnuson said. “I am thankful for the opportunity to be able to wrestle the best from around the country and to see where I am in comparison to them. I hope to learn from it and make myself better and to enjoy it and have fun.”
The opening session will begin at 10 a.m. on Friday in Cleveland.
