PITTSBURGH, Pa. – South Dakota State’s Henry Pohlmeyer was eliminated on the opening day competition at the 2019 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships Thursday at PPG Paints Arena.
The lone Jackrabbit to qualify for the national meet, Pohlmeyer went 0-2 to finish his junior season with a 20-15 overall record.
Seeded 22nd at 149 pounds, Pohlmeyer lost by fall in the second period to 11th-seeded Joshua Heil of Campbell during the first session. Heil scored on a takedown late in the first period and upped his lead to 4-0 with a reversal early in the second period. The final 25 seconds featured a flurry of activity in which Pohlmeyer recorded a takedown and 4-point near-fall for a 7-4 lead before Heil wriggled out of a pinning predicament to come up with a takedown of his own and put Pohlmeyer’s shoulders to the mat just before the buzzer.
In the evening session, Pohlmeyer squared off against Tejon Anthony of George Mason, who was seeded 27th. After a scoreless first period, Anthony cracked the scoring column in the opening seconds of the middle period with an escape and picked up another point when Pohlmeyer was penalized for stalling. Pohlmeyer managed an escape in the third period, but was again penalized for stalling, bringing his second consecutive berth in the NCAAs to an end with a 3-1 loss.
