The Rochester Community and Technical College Yellowjackets competed in the NJCAA National Tournament this past weekend in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Leading the Jackets was Sophomore Shane Siewert at 174 and Freshman Morgen Moreno at 197.
Siewert went into the tournament as the number one seed and was able to put together three solid matches on day one moving him into semifinals. In the semifinal match Shane lost a close 8-6 decision to Ashton Eyler of Iowa Central. “Shane has always been a slow starter, and we knew having the semifinal as his first match on day two may be difficult,” said Coach Rager. Siewert was able to bounce back from the loss to pin his next opponent and defeat Gage McBride of Barton 6-2 for third place.
Moreno was unseeded going into the national tournament, but quickly became one of the favorites for spectators to watch. “Morgen wrestled his style and is often underestimated. He sets up some funky stuff and is fun to watch compete,” said Coach Rager. Throughout the tournament Morgen put together four falls on his way to earning sixth place.
As a team, the Yellowjackets placed second among the non-scholarship schools, just seven points behind Harper. Going into the tournament the Yellowjackets had six qualifiers compared to Harper’s ten. “I knew it would be a difficult task and we almost pulled it off. All of the guys wrestled hard and I’m proud of how our season ended,” noted Coach Rager.
