Three NDSU Wrestlers Still Active at NCAA Championships after First Day

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – North Dakota State has three wrestlers – 125 Brent Fleetwood, 133 Cam Sykora and 165 Andrew Fogarty – still active in the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships consolation bracket following the first day of action Thursday, March 21, before 17,957 spectators at PPG Paints Arena. The Bison are tied for 33rd in the team standings with 5 points.

Fleetwood, a senior from Smyrna, Del., opened with a 2-0 decision over Carmen Ferrante of Penn in the 125-pound opener. Fleetwood gained an escape in the second period and then held the top position for the entire third period to record the win. Princeton’s No. 7-seeded Pat Glory jumped out to a first period lead and rolled to a 10-0 major decision over Fleetwood. Fleetwood (25-5) will wrestle Ohio State/Northern Colorado in the consolation bracket.

Fogarty, a redshirt junior from Jordan, Minn., opened with a 17-2 tech fall at 7:00 over Gardner-Webb’s Tyler Marinelli. Fogarty gave up an early takedown and then went to work against Marinelli. It was his fifth tech fall of the season. In the second round, Fogarty lost a 9-2 decision to No. 4-seed Evan Wick of Wisconsin. Fogarty moves into the consolation bracket.

Sykora, a redshirt junior from Wheaton, Minn., rebounded from a 3-2 loss to Wyoming’s No. 12 Montorie Bridges with an impressive effort. Sykora used a 7-point second period to springboard to a 13-2 major decision over Kent State’s Tim Rooney to advance. Sykora improved to 21-9.
