The Guillotine 2019 Academic All-State Wrestlers

The 2019 edition of The Guillotine Academic All-State honorees features 30 first-team members, 30 second-team members, 31 third-team members, and 42 honorable mention wrestlers.

One hundred thirty-five total wrestlers, representing 70 teams, were submitted this season. Points were tallied based on current varsity wins, current state tournament placement, and cumulative high school GPA. Each of the first team wrestlers receives two certificates and a letter of recognition.

Everyone on the first team placed fourth or higher at state this year, including 13 champions and eight runners-up. First team members have an average of 44.6 season wins, an average season win percentage of 94%, and an average GPA of 3.87.

Fifteen nominees had a perfect 4.0 GPA: Matt Baker of Delano, Jake Bennett of Zumbrota-Mazeppa, Matthew Boyum of Chanhassen, Cael Carlson of Willmar, Matthew Jeska of Nashwauk-Keewatin/Greenway, Trey Kruse of Stillwater Area, Alex Lange of Holdingford, Ben Lunn of Shakopee, Jose Reyes of Tri-City United, Kellen Schauer of Grand Rapids, Garsen Schorr of Kasson-Mantorville, Reier Sjomeling of Delano, Phil Skeps of St. Thomas Academy, Sebas Swiggum of Apple Valley, and Aidan Willard of Trinity School at River Ridge.

Seven nominees finished as undefeated 2019 state champions: Bryce Benhart of Lakeville North, Seth Brossard of Kenyon-Wanamingo, Cael Carlson of Willmar, Zach Glazier of Albert Lea Area, Riley Habisch of Buffalo, Patrick Kennedy of Kasson-Mantorville, and Ty Moser of Perham.

First Team

Gabe Zierden of Albany
12th grade, 195 pounds

Gabe is a three-time state entrant placing third at 195 pounds this year in Class AA. He also placed fourth at 182 pounds as a junior and sixth at 182 pounds as a sophomore. Gabe had a season record of 45-5. He ended his high school career with a record of 142-30 including 77 pins. Gabe’s GPA is 3.88. Honors and achievements include four-time all-conference, school record for career wins and pins, and wins in a season, MWCA Academic All-State, and football Academic All-State. Future plans are to wrestle at Concordia-Moorhead and continue his studies. Gabe’s parents are Matt and Karla, and his coach is Alex Evan.


Zach Glazier of Albert Lea Area
12th grade, 182 pounds

Zach is a two-time state champion, a three-time finalist, and a five-time placewinner. He won the 182-pound Class AAA title this year and the 170-pound title as a junior. Zach also placed second at 152 pounds as a sophomore, fourth at 126 pounds as a freshman, and third at 106 pounds as an eighth-grader. Zach finished his season undefeated with 47 wins. He ended his high school career with a record of 220-23 (90.5 win %) including 85 pins. Zach’s GPA is 3.94. Honors and achievements include 2019 Cheesehead Tournament champion, 2018 Rumble on the Red Tournament champion and OW, two-time Minnesota Christmas Tournament champion, and 2017 Fargo All-American. Zach is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to wrestle at the University of Iowa. Zach’s parents are Ann and Dan, and his coach is Paul Durbahn.


Sebas Swiggum

Sebas Swiggum of Apple Valley
12th grade, 138 pounds

Sebas is a four-time state entrant winning the 138-pound Class AAA title this year. He placed second at 132 pounds as a junior and third at 120 pounds as a freshman. Sebas had an impressive season record of 53-2. He ended his high school career with a record of 181-46 including 106 pins. Sebas’ GPA is 4.0. Honors and achievements include five-time Section All-Academic Team, 2018 and 2019 The Clash All-Academic Team, 2019 MWCA Academic All-State, 2018 Guillotine Academic All-State First Team, and 2018 Rumble on the Red Tournament champion. Future plans are to wrestle at the University of Minnesota. Sebas’ parents are Paul and Sue, and his coach is Josh Barlage.


Brady Gross

Brady Gross of Apple Valley
12th grade, 145 pounds

Brady is a two-time state finalist and a three-time placer. He was the Class AAA 145-pound runner-up this year as a senior and the 138-pound runner-up as a junior. He also placed fifth at 120 pounds as a sophomore. Brady had a season record of 48-5. He ended his high school career with a record of 136-38. Brady’s GPA is 3.94. Honors and achievements include five-time Section All-Academic Team, 2018 and 2019 The Clash All-Academic Team, 2018 Guillotine Academic All-State First Team, 2019 MWCA Academic All-State and Scholarship recipient, and 2018 Rumble on the Red Tournament champion. Future plans are to wrestle at Augsburg University. Brady’s parents are Troy and Rhonda, and his coach is Josh Barlage.


Tyler Bents

Tyler Bents of Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa
12th grade, 138 pounds

Tyler is a five-time state entrant placing fourth at 138 pounds this year in Class A. He also placed third at 132 pounds as a junior. Tyler had a season record of 44-3. He ended his high school career with a record of 173-54 including 77 pins. Tyler’s GPA is 3.98. Honors and achievements include five-time all-conference, four-time academic all-conference, multi-year team captain, member of FCA, Student Council president, and National Honor Society’s local blood-drive director. Future plans are to wrestle at Concordia-Moorhead and study computer science. Tyler’s parents are Nick and Kristine, and his coach is Jack Mueller.


Canon Swanson

Canon Swanson of Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa
11th grade, 126 pounds

Canon is a two-time finalist and a four-time placer in four state tournament appearances. He was the Class A 126-pound runner-up this year as a junior and the 120-pound runner-up as a sophomore. He also placed fifth at 113 pounds as a freshman and sixth at 106 pounds as an eighth-grader. Canon had an impressive season record of 45-1. His current career record is 172-28 including 78 pins. Canon’s GPA is 3.73. Honors and achievements include MWCA Academic All-State, three-year team captain, five-time letter winner, and three-time academic all-conference. Future plans are to continue his education and wrestling career. Canon’s parents are Aaron and Tami, and his coach is Jack Mueller.


Riley Habisch

Riley Habisch of Buffalo
12th grade, 170 pounds

Riley is a five-time state entrant and three-time state placer. He won the Class AAA title this year at 170 pounds, placed third at 160 pounds as a junior, and fourth at 152 pounds as a sophomore. Riley finished his season undefeated with 39 wins. He ended his high school career with a record of 161-32 including 62 pins. Riley’s GPA is 3.73. Honors and achievements include five-time academic all-conference, three-time MSHSL Academic Award, 2017 Cadet freestyle All-American, two-time Team MVP, three-time All-District Academic Award for football, two-time Team MVP for football, and 2017 academic all-conference for Track and Field. Future plans are to wrestle at North Dakota State University. Riley’s parents are Jeff and Suzette, and his coach is Ben Presler.


Jaden Kindopp

Jaden Kindopp of Canby
12th grade, 182 pounds

Jaden made the most of his two state tournament appearances by winning the Class A 182-pound title this year as a senior and the 170-pound title as a junior. Jaden had an impressive season record of 36-2. He ended his high school career with a record of 120-51 including 64 pins. Jaden’s GPA is 3.89. Honors and achievements include 2018 Team Hardest Worker and 2018 and 2019 Team MVP. Future plans are to attend South Dakota State for Pre-Dental and become a dentist or orthodontist. Jaden’s parents are Justin and Lynn, and his coach is Gary Stoks.


Michael Nelson

Michael Nelson of Dover-Eyota
12th grade, 195 pounds

Michael is a two-time state entrant winning the 195-pound Class A title this year. He placed third at 182 pounds as a junior. Michael had a season record of 45-3. He ended his high school career with a record of 168-66 including 84 pins. Michael’s GPA is 3.68. Honors and achievements include All-Clash Team, all-conference, and Peer Helpers. Michael is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to wrestle at North Dakota State University and major in IT/Business. Michael’s parents are Chad and Julie, and he is coached by his father.


Kellen Schauer

Kellen Schauer of Grand Rapids
12th grade, 145 pounds

Kellen is a four-time state entrant placing second at 145 pounds this year in Class AA. Kellen had an impressive season record of 54-1. He ended his high school career with a record of 241-30 including 169 pins. Kellen’s GPA is 4.0. Honors and achievements include 2019 MWCA Academic All-State, 2018 Guillotine Academic All-State 2nd Team, 2016-2019 Minnesota Storm Junior Duals/Fargo member, Itasca Community College Dean’s List, two-year team captain for wrestling and cross country, and three-time Grand Rapids Student of the Month. Future plans are to wrestle at Concordia-Moorhead and pursue a business degree. Kellen’s parents are Mike and Mary, and he is coached by his father.


Garsen Schorr

Garsen Schorr of Kasson-Mantorville
12th grade, 220 pounds

Garsen is a three-time state entrant placing second at 220 pounds this year in Class AA. Garsen had a season record of 40-4. He ended his high school career with a record of 142-47 including 60 pins. Garsen’s GPA is 4.0. Honors and achievements include 2019 MWCA Academic All-State, 2018 Minnesota Football Coaches Assoc. Academic All-State, Minnesota Football Honors Scholar-Athlete Award, Minnesota Association of Honors Society, and four-year High School High Honor Roll. Future plans are to study business analytics at the University of Notre Dame. Garsen’s parents are Scott and Brenda, and his coach is Jamie Heidt.


Patrick Kennedy

Patrick Kennedy of Kasson-Mantorville
11th grade, 182 pounds

Patrick is a three-time state champion and a five-time placewinner. He won the 182-pound Class AA title this year, the 182-pound title as a junior, and the 170-pound title as a sophomore. Patrick also placed third at 145 pounds as an eighth-grader and sixth at 132 pounds as a seventh-grader. Patrick finished his season undefeated with 46 wins. His current career record is 187-20 (90.3 win %) including 67 pins. Patrick’s GPA is 3.68. Honors and achievements include 2019 MWCA Academic All-State, three-time Class AA All-State Tournament Team, 2017 and 2018 freestyle All-American, 2017 Super 32 champion and OW, 2018 Super 32 runner-up, and three-year High School High Honor Roll. Future plans are to wrestle at the University of Iowa and study business. Patrick’s parents are Matt and Tammy, and his coach is Jamie Heidt.


Seth Brossard

Seth Brossard of Kenyon-Wanamingo
12th grade, 152 pounds

Seth won the Class A title this year at 152 pounds. He is a four-time state entrant placing third at 132 pounds as a sophomore. Seth finished his season undefeated with 48 wins. He ended his high school career with a record of 158-23 including 86 pins. Seth’s GPA is 3.91. Honors and achievements include four-time HVL All-Conference and 2019 Class A State All-Tournament Team. Future plans are to wrestle at Rochester Community & Technical College and pursue a degree in elementary education. Seth’s parents are Phil and Dawn, and his coach is Matt Ryan.


Tyler Ryan

Tyler Ryan of Kenyon-Wanamingo
12th grade, 160 pounds

Tyler is a two-time state champion. He won the 160-pound Class A title this year and the 152-pound title as a sophomore. Tyler had an impressive season record of 34-2. He ended his high school career with a record of 155-26 including 88 pins. Tyler’s GPA is 3.9. Honors and achievements include four-time HVL All-Conference, Kenyon-Wanamingo Triple ‘A’ Award nominee and Subsection IV male selection, and 2019 Class A State All-Tournament Team. Tyler is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to wrestle at St. Cloud State University and pursue a nursing degree. Tyler’s parents are Matt and Molly, and he is coached by his father.


Ben Schmalz

Ben Schmalz of Mound-Westonka
12th grade, 182 pounds

Ben is a three-time state entrant placing third at 182 pounds this year in Class AAA. Ben had a season record of 50-3. He ended his high school career with a record of 181-54 including 68 pins. Ben’s GPA is 3.93. Honors and achievements include three-time all-conference. Future plans are to attend Winona State to study composite engineering or computer science. Ben’s parents are Doug and Brenda, and his coach is Todd Munsterteiger.


Danny Striggow

Danny Striggow of Orono
11th grade, 220 pounds

Danny won the Class AA title this year at 220 pounds. He is a three-time state entrant. Danny had an impressive season record of 50-2. His current career record is 143-50 including 100 pins. Danny’s GPA is 3.42. Honors and achievements include 2019 NHSCA National Champion, 2018 Fargo Cadet All-American, three-time NHSCA All-American, and two-time USA Wrestling Folkstyle Nationals All-American. Future plans are to wrestle or play football at a Division I college. Danny’s parents are Jeff and Michelle, and his coach is Joe McPherson.


Zachary Peterson

Zachary Peterson of Perham
12th grade, 182 pounds

Zachary is a four-time state entrant and two-time placewinner. He was the Class AA 182-pound runner-up this year. He placed third at 182 pounds as a junior. Zachary had an impressive season record of 50-2. He ended his high school career with a record of 207-45 including 106 pins. Zachary’s GPA is 3.87. Honors and achievements include school record holder for wins (207), State Dual All-Tournament Team, two-time conference champion, two-year team captain, six-year letter winner, 2019 MWCA Academic All-State, Interact club president, and member of student council. Future plans are to wrestle at Augustana University. Zachary’s parents are Ron and Lori, and his coach is Robb Moser.


Ty Moser

Ty Moser of Perham
12th grade, 195 pounds

Ty is a three-time state placer winning the 195-pound Class AA title this year. He placed third at 195 pounds as a junior and third at 195 pounds as a sophomore. Ty finished his season undefeated with 46 wins. He ended his high school career with a record of 196-30. Ty’s GPA is 3.98. Honors and achievements include three-time State Dual All-Tournament Team, two-time MWCA Academic All-State, three-time All-Academic Section Team, and 2018 Guillotine Academic All-State First Team. Future plans are to wrestle at North Dakota State University. Ty is coached by his father Robb.


Jackson Held

Jackson Held of Royalton/Upsala
12th grade, 160 pounds

Jackson is a five-time state entrant placing fourth at 160 pounds this year in Class A. He also placed fourth at 160 pounds as a junior. Jackson had a season record of 42-5. He ended his high school career with a record of 156-48 including 83 pins. Jackson’s GPA is 3.97. Honors and achievements include Chisago Lakes Tournament and Howard Lake Tournament OW, Morrison County All-Area Wrestling Team, A Honor Roll – grades 7-12, top-10 in graduating class, graduating with honors, Royalton Wrestling – Hardest Worker, Leadership, and MVP Awards. Future plans are to wrestle at the St. Cloud State University and pursue a construction management degree. Jackson’s parents are Joe and Janet, and his coach is Terry Gorecki.


Tyler Shackle

Tyler Shackle of Scott West
12th grade, 138 pounds

Tyler is a three-time state placer winning the 138-pound Class AA title this year. He placed third at 132 pounds as a junior and fifth at 132 pounds as a sophomore. Tyler had a season record of 44-6. He ended his high school career with a record of 161-45 including 50 pins. Tyler’s GPA is 3.72. Honors and achievements include 2018 Guillotine Academic All-State First Team, four-time all-conference, MRC Wrestler of the Year, 2019 Minnesota Christmas Tournament champion (four-time placer), Rumble on the Red Tournament placewinner, and honor student. Future plans are to wrestle at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and pursue an elementary education degree. Tyler’s parents are Pamela and Troy, and his coaches are Darren Ripley and Jerold Stauffacher.


Justin Stauffacher

Justin Stauffacher of Scott West
12th grade, 126 pounds

Justin is a two-time state entrant placing third at 126 pounds this year in Class AA. He also placed fifth at 120 pounds as a junior. Justin had a season record of 46-6. He ended his high school career with a record of 159-40 including 45 pins. Justin’s GPA is 3.85. Honors and achievements include four-time Rumble on the Red Tournament placewinner, three-time Minnesota Christmas Tournament placewinner, team captain, 2018 Guillotine Academic All-State 2nd Team, and 2015-2019 A Honor Roll. Future plans are to wrestle at Augsburg University and study business management and finance. Justin’s parents are Jerold and Kathi, and he is coached by his father Jerold and Darren Ripley.


Ben Lunn

Ben Lunn of Shakopee
11th grade, 120 pounds

Ben is a two-time state finalist. He was the Class AAA 120-pound runner-up this year as a junior and the 113-pound runner-up as a sophomore. Ben had a season record of 43-4. His current career record is 108-12 (90 win %). Ben’s GPA is 4.0. Future plans are to wrestle in college. Ben’s parents are Dan and Marcy, and his coach is Jim Jackson.


Owen Bjerga

Owen Bjerga of Staples-Motley
11th grade, 160 pounds

Owen is a four-time state entrant and two-time placewinner. He was the Class A 160-pound runner-up this year. He placed sixth at 138 pounds as a junior. Owen had an impressive season record of 47-2. His current career record is 153-31 including 83 pins. Owen’s GPA is 3.68. Honors and achievements include A honor roll and part of student council. Future plans are to wrestle in college, become a national champion, and major in business. Owen’s parents are Phil and Heidi, and his coach is Mark Carlson.


Trey Kruse

Trey Kruse of Stillwater Area
11th grade, 138 pounds

Trey is a four-time state entrant placing fourth at 138 pounds this year in Class AAA. He also placed fourth at 132 pounds as a junior. Trey had a season record of 43-7. His current career record is 183-52 including 116 pins. Trey’s GPA is 4.0. Honors and achievements include five-year varsity letter winner, four-time Section 4AAA champion, three-year team captain, currently 2nd all-time in wins in Stillwater team history, Team MVP the last two seasons, football letter winner, A member of the Stillwater Key Club, recognized as a “Hero of Autism” by Autism Light – featured on KARE 11 and Good Morning America last fall. Future plans are to wrestle in college and pursue a degree in engineering or the medical field. Trey’s parents are Troy and Lisa, and his coach is Tim Hartung.


Cade Lundeen

Cade Lundeen of Thief River Falls
12th grade, 132 pounds

Cade is a five-time state entrant placing third at 132 pounds this year in Class AA. He also placed fourth at 126 pounds as a junior and sixth at 120 pounds as a sophomore. Cade had an impressive season record of 50-2. He ended his high school career with a record of 218-49 including 128 pins. Cade’s GPA is 3.9. Honors and achievements include two-year team captain, five-time all-conference, school records for wins, pins, and wins in a season, 2019 MWCA Academic All-State, three-time Section 8AA Academic All-Star Team, and Alfred Olson Memorial Scholarship finalist. Cade is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to wrestle at Concordia and go into business. Cade’s parents are Brian and Beth, and his coach is Kenny Geiser.


Cade Mueller

Cade Mueller of Waconia
12th grade, 160 pounds

Cade is a four-time state entrant winning the 160-pound Class AA title in 2018 as a junior. He was runner-up this season at 160 pounds as a senior and fourth at 160 pounds as a sophomore. Cade had an impressive season record of 50-2. He ended his high school career with a record of 172-38 including 80 pins. Cade’s GPA is 3.61. Honors and achievements include school record for wins, Rumble on the Red Tournament champion, three-time Wright County All-Conference, and two-year team captain. Future plans are to wrestle at Augustana University. Cade’s parents are Darlene and George, and his coach is Nick Hackman.


Carter Entinger

Carter Entinger of Watertown-Mayer/Mayer Lutheran
12th grade, 138 pounds

Carter is a two-time state entrant placing third at 138 pounds this year in Class AA. Carter had a season record of 38-4. He ended his high school career with a record of 149-44 including 49 pins. Carter’s GPA is 3.92. Honors and achievements include three-time all-conference, Herold Journal Winter Sports Athlete of the Year, football and track letterwinner, wrestling and football captain, A honor roll, and Academic Letter for being above a 3.75 GPA for three semesters. Future plans are to continue his wrestling career in college. Carter’s parents are Dave and Jamie, and his coach is Kurt Becker and Bill McDonald.


Cael Carlson

Cael Carlson of Willmar
12th grade, 145 pounds

Cael is a two-time state champion and a four-time finalist. He won the 145-pound Class AAA title this year and the 138-pound title as a junior. Cael was runner-up at 126 pounds as a sophomore and 113 pounds as a freshman. Cael finished his season undefeated with 42 wins. He ended his high school career with a record of 182-16 (91.9 win %) including 112 pins. Cael’s GPA is 4.0. Honors and achievements include 2018 State Dual All-Tournament Team, two-time MWCA Academic All-State, 2019 MWCA Scholarship recipient, 2018 USA Wrestling Greco-Roman National Champion, track and cross-country letterwinner, and Willmar Triple A Award runner-up. Future plans are to wrestle at the University of Minnesota and major in ag business and dairy science which he will use when he returns to his family farm after college. Cael’s parents are Chad and Kindra, and his coach is Ed Oehlers.


Brett Willaby

Brett Willaby of Windom/Mountain Lake
11th grade, 126 pounds

Brett is a three-time state placer winning the 126-pound Class A title this year. He placed third at 113 pounds as a sophomore and fourth at 106 pounds as a freshman. Brett had a season record of 35-3. His current career record is 124-25 including 53 pins. Brett’s GPA is 3.98. Honors and achievements include A honor roll, letterwinner in wrestling, baseball, and football, 2019 KNUJ Wrestler of the Year, and MWCA Academic All-State. Future plans are undecided. Brett’s parents are Dean and Stephanie, and his coach is Nick Kulseth and Travis Elg.


Jake Bennett

Jake is a two-time state finalist and a three-time placer. He was the Class A third-place finisher at 182 pounds this year as a senior. He was runner-up at 195-pounds as a junior and as a sophomore. Jake had a season record of 39-4. He ended his high school career with a record of 194-64 including 87 pins. Jake’s GPA is 4.0. Honors and achievements include 2018 Guillotine Academic All-State First Team, two-time MWCA Academic All-State, and 2019 B-State Classic Tournament runner-up.
