Jones and Magnuson Ranked in Top 15 in Preseason Rankings as MSUM Wrestling Opens Practice

MOORHEAD, Minn. — Two Minnesota State University Moorhead junior wrestlers — Cole Jones and Jordan Magnuson — are ranked in the top 15 in the nation in Division II in their respective weight classes according to preseason rankings released by The Open Mat. The Dragons officially opened practice for the 2019-20 season on Thursday.

Jones is ranked sixth in the nation at 125 pounds. He went 3-2 at the national championships a year ago and took seventh to become MSUM’s first All-American since 2017. Jones finished 29-10 last season and was an All-NSIC First Team selection.

Magnuson, also a national qualifier last season, is ranked 13th at 285 pounds. He was second at the Super Region 3 meet last season.

The Open Mat Preseason Rankings

Including Jones and Magnuson, MSUM will have three national qualifiers on the roster this season. Senior Zach Scott, who redshirted in 2018-19, was a national qualifier at 141 pounds in 2017-18.

MSUM, entering its 11th season under the direction of Head Coach Kris Nelson, returns eight starters from a year ago.

MSUM opens the regular season on Nov. 9 at the Bison Open in Fargo.
