Hennen takes first while SMSU places seven at DWO

MITCHELL, S.D. – Southwest Minnesota State’s Cole Hennen took first place going 4-0 at the Dakota Wesleyan Open on Saturday to lead the Mustangs as SMSU places seven total in the second open of the 2019-20 season.

Hennen, who wrestled 184, went 4-0 after opening the first championship round with a win by fall at 1:08, over Jeremiah Glise from Briar Cliff, before earning two wins by decision in the quarter and semifinal bouts against Tanner Stamper-Smith who wrestled unattached, and over Zach Peterson from Augustana. In the first-place match, Hennen earned a win by major decision over Joseph Reimers from Kearney Nebraska to complete his perfect outing at the open.

Seasoned senior Andrew Petersen wrestled heavyweight to earn a second-place finish going 3-1 on the day. Petersen cruised into the first-place match with three wins by decision before suffering a win by fall at 0:57 by Steven Hajas from Augustana.

Robert Shields placed third at 149 with going 5-1 on the day suffering the only loss in the quarterfinals. Shields wrestled his way back up to earn his spot in the third-place match to earn a win by decision over Collin Stilson from Buena Vista.

Jackson Ryan took fourth at 197 earned two wins by decision, a win by fall, and a win by sudden victory before falling to Damen Moyer of Briar Cliff by fall at 4:32 in the third-place match.

Senior Brock Buysse earned a spot at the top with a fourth-place finish with a 3-2 record on the day. Neil Hanson, 285, and Willie Meine, 125, both placed fifth to round out the finishers for the Mustangs.

Southwest Minnesota State will open the conference season on Wednesday, Nov. 20 at St. Cloud State at 7 p.m. in Halenbeck Hall.
