SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The Augustana wrestling team competes in its first dual of the season Friday when it heads to Tempe, Arizona, to take on the No. 8 ranked Arizona State Sun Devils at 8 p.m.
The dual with Augustana serves as Arizona State’s home opener for the 2019-20 season while the Vikings hit the road for the third consecutive weekend.
The Sun Devils
After finishing second in the Pac-12 Championship and 12th at the NCAA Division I Championship during the 2018-19 campaign, Arizona State is off to a 2-0 start this season with dual wins against No. 20 Virginia and No. 23 Purdue. The Sun Devils return a veteran group that includes two-time National Champion Zahid Valencia, All-Americans Josh Shields and Tanner Hall, and Pac-12 Champions Anthony Valencia and Josh Maruca.
The Vikings
Last weekend, redshirt freshman Hunter Burnett, junior Tanner Brengle, sophomore Daniel Bishop, redshirt freshman Steven Hajas and freshman Cade Mueller (unattached) all took home first-place titles in their respective weight classes at the Dakota Wesleyan Open. Through two tournaments, the Vikings have had eight first-place titles and of the 32 placements by the team, 23 have been in the top-five.
