Fogarty Advances to Semifinals at Cliff Keen Invitational, Franek & Metz Stay Alive

LAS VEGAS, Nev.—North Dakota State No. 9-ranked 165-pounder Andrew Fogarty advanced to the semifinals, while 157-pounder Jared Franek and No. 22-ranked heavyweight Brandon Metz remain alive in the consolation bracket at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational in the Las Vegas Convention Center on Friday, Dec. 6. The Bison are 17th in the team standings with 19 points.

At 11 a.m. Central Time on Saturday, Dec. 7, Franek (10-3) squares off with No. 19-ranked Jacori Teemer of Arizona State, and Metz (11-1) faces No. 14-ranked Brian Andrews of Wyoming in the second consolation quarterfinals. At noon Saturday, Fogarty (11-0) takes on No. 5-ranked Joshua Shields of

Fogarty, a redshirt senior from Jordan, Minn., reached the semifinals with a pair of wins. He defeated Chase Straw of Iowa State by the score of 4-0. Following a scoreless first period, Fogarty gained an escape in the second and held the top position for the entire period including a 2-point nearfall.

Fogarty came out strong in an 8-0 major decision against No. 15-ranked Philip Conigliario of Harvard with six points in the first period with an early takedown and a pair of 2-point nearfalls.

Franek, a redshirt freshman from West Fargo, bounced back from an opening round loss with three straight wins by outscoring three opponents by the score of 29-13 to move through the brackets. His third period takedown with 14-seconds left was the difference in a 3-1 decision over No. 33-ranked Colton Yapoujian of Cornell.

Metz, a redshirt from West Fargo, posted a pair of 3-2 decisions to advance. He recorded a takedown in the first period and gained a quick escape in the third for the win over Oklahoma’s Josiah Jones. Metz then came up with a takedown with 16-seconds left in the third period for the victory over NC State’s Deonte Wilson.
