No. 6 Peacocks pull away from Mustangs in dual victory
FAYETTE, Iowa – The comeback efforts of the Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team (0-2, 0-2 NSIC) were not enough for No. 6 Upper Iowa (3-0, 3-0 NSIC) as the Peacocks pulled away mid-dual to claim a 28-6 victory on Thursday night at Dorman Gymnasium.
The Mustangs dropped the first two bouts before Justin Sampson earned a 3-2 decision victory over UIU’s Ryan Schmalen. Robert Shields (149) then piggy-backed off the momentum to earn the back-to-back decision victory with a 4-2 edge over UIU’s Chance Throndson, to tie the dual at 6-6.
The two victories would be all for the Mustangs on the evening as the Peacocks swept the rest of the dual.
At 157, Nathan Moore led the entire bout until the final minute of the third period. Moore held a 5-4 lead before Mac Spotts earned a take-down take a 6-5 lead with under a minute remaining. With three seconds left, Moore escaped but not enough time as the bout ended with Spotts earning the victory. Although the Mustangs used a challenge, the challenge was overruled, and Moore fell by decision.
The Peacocks earned eight bout victories over the Mustangs, six of them by decision. After Moore’s loss by one point, Cole Hennen (184) and Andrew Petersen (285) each fell by the same fate.
Southwest Minnesota State (0-2, 0-2 NSIC) faces Augsburg University (1-0) tomorrow at 7 p.m. for a non-conference dual in Minneapolis at Si Melby Hall.
