#1 SCSU to host meet at Healy High School in Pierz

The #1 ranked St. Cloud State University wrestling team (12-0, 4-0 NSIC) will be taking its act on the road for a home match against Minnesota State Moorhead (1-5, 0-4 NSIC) on Thursday, Jan. 30 at Healy High School in Pierz, Minn.

The Huskies will share a night of wrestling in Pierz that will start with an elementary/junior high wrestling match at 4:15 p.m. and a dual match between the Pierz Healy High School Pioneers varsity team against Sartell High School at 5:30 p.m. SCSU and MSU Moorhead are slated to begin their NSIC dual match at 7:00 p.m. on Jan. 30.

Tickets for the evening of wrestling in Pierz are $6 for adults and $3 for students and you can purchase them at the gate that evening.

The match will be a homecoming for SCSU senior Kolton Eischens, who is a 2016 graduate of Healy High School and a three-time state tournament medalist for the Pioneers. Eischens is currently ranked #4 in the nation among NCAA DII wrestlers at 174-pounds. He is 10-1 with seven falls for the Huskies this season.

Of note, this will mark the second time that SCSU has wrestled at Healy High School. The Huskies also posted a 41-3 victory over Southwest Minnesota State on Feb. 4, 2016, in a match at Healy High School. SCSU’s roster that season included All-American Clint Poster, who is another top wrestler from SCSU that prepped at Healy High School.

The Huskies will complete their weekend with an NSIC dual match at #17 Minnesota State University (6-1, 2-0 NSIC) in Mankato, Minn. at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1.

  • Here is a rundown of SCSU’s nationally ranked wrestlers as they head into the upcoming matches vs. MSU Moorhead and Minnesota State. At 133-pounds, Garrett Vos is ranked #2 with a 10-0 record. At 141-pounds, Garrett Aldrich is ranked #5 with a 13-0 record. at 149-pounds, James Pleski is ranked #2 with a 13-3 record. At 157-pounds, Jake Barzowski is ranked #2 with an 11-2 record. At 165-pounds, Devin FitzPatrick is ranked #3 with a 12-1 record. At 174-pounds, Kolton Eischens is ranked #4 with a 10-1 record. At 184-pounds, Tyree Overton is ranked #2 with a 12-2 record. To complete the group, Noah Ryan is ranked #9 at 197-pounds with a 13-2 record.
  • As a team, SCSU was ranked #1 in the latest NWCA DII Coaches Association national poll. SCSU has faced a very tough schedule this winter and the list of competition includes many top-ranked NCAA II teams. So far this year, SCSU has gained dual victories over #2 McKendree, #4 Pitt-Johnstown, #6 Central Oklahoma, #8 Tiffin, #23 Northern State and #23 Minot State. SCSU has also charted wins over these teams that received votes in the latest NCAA II poll: American International, Western Colorado, UMary and Maryville.
  • Last weekend, SCSU scored a 39-3 victory at #23 Minot State on Jan. 24 and completed its road trip with a 45-0 win at UMary on Jan. 25. Vos, Pleski, Barzowski, FitzPatrick, Eischens, Overton, Ryan and Ezayah Oropeza all earned two victories a piece over the weekend.
  • The Huskies have now won an NCAA DII record 60 dual matches in a row. The last loss for the Huskies was a 22-17 setback against Indianapolis on Jan. 14, 2017. Of note, SCSU’s last loss at home was a 21-15 defeat by Upper Iowa on Feb. 19, 2010, and SCSU’s last loss in NSIC competition occurred on Jan. 27, 2011 at Augustana (18-13). Since that match, SCSU has won 68 consecutive NSIC dual matches. The Huskies have won eight consecutive NSIC titles, four NCAA DII championships and six NCAA DII regional crowns during the Steve Costanzo era at SCSU.
  • One of the nation’s top coaches, Steve Costanzo owns a 220-28 record during his tenure with the Huskies. He joined the staff as head coach of the Huskies in 2006-07 and his teams have only lost five dual matches since the start of the 2011-12 season.
  • The last time that Huskies have lost a match to Minnesota State Mankato was a 24-15 loss on Feb. 19, 2009. The last time that the Huskies have lost a match to Minnesota State Moorhead was a 19-17 defeat on Jan. 9, 2007.
  • Last year, St. Cloud State charted a 32-6 win at Minnesota State Moorhead and the Huskies also gained a 30-9 win over Minnesota State in Halenbeck Hall.
  • Due to the matches being snowed out at the Ranger Duals this season, the Huskies have added a trip to Don Parker Open in Eau Claire, Wisc. on Feb. 8. The tournament at UW-Eau Claire is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. that day.
