Augustana Hosts No. 17 Northern State

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The Augustana wrestling team is going for its third-consecutive dual victory against nationally-ranked opponents Thursday night in the Elmen Center at 8 p.m. The Vikings host No. 17 Northern State for their first NSIC dual of the season.

The Vikings were selected to finish fourth in 2019-20 NSIC Wrestling Preseason Poll, while the Wolves were selected to finish sixth. Currently, both squads are ranked in the top-10 in the Super Region 5 standings, with Augustana in third with 54 votes and Northern State in fifth with 50 votes. Thursday’s match will be the fourth-consecutive home dual for the Vikings and the fourth-consecutive road dual for the Wolves.

Before the Vikings take the mat, Canton High School and Custer High School will dual in the Elmen Center at 6 p.m. One ticket will get you into both matches on Thursday night.

The Wolves
Northern State currently holds a 5-2 record with wins against Saint John’s, Concordia College, MSU Moorhead, UNC Pembroke, and Simon Fraser. The Wolves have only conceded losses to two No. 1 teams in the country, Division III powerhouse Wartburg College and the defending Division II national champion St. Cloud State Huskies.

The Vikings
Augustana currently holds a 3-2 dual record with both of those losses coming to Division I schools. The Vikings have knocked off the No. 2 and No. 23 teams in the Elmen Center so far this season and notched their first win against UW-Parkside who was receiving four national votes at the time.

Earlier this week, the Vikings made a splash in the NWCA Coaches’ Poll and Super Region 5 rankings. In the NWCA Coaches Poll, junior Ben Kelvington is now ranked No. 8 at 174 pounds and redshirt freshman Hunter Burnett is now ranked No. 11 at 141 pounds.

In the Super Region 5 rankings, Burnett and Kelvington are ranked third in their respective weight classes while redshirt freshman Jack Huffman is ranked fifth at 133 pounds, redshirt freshman Jacob Tvinnereim is ranked third at 157 pounds, sophomore Daniel Bishop is ranked third at 197 pounds and redshirt freshman Steven Hajas is ranked fifth at 285 pounds.
