Augustana Readies for SMSU Dual

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The Augustana wrestling team is going for its sixth-consecutive dual victory Friday night in the Elmen Center when it takes on the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State at 7 p.m.

The Vikings were selected to finish fourth in the 2019-20 NSIC Wrestling Preseason Poll, while the Mustangs were selected to finish ninth. In the Super Region 5 standings, Augustana is currently ranked third with 54 points and SMSU is currently ranked ninth with 27 points.

The Mustangs
After starting the season 0-3 with losses to St. Cloud State, Upper Iowa and Augsburg, Southwest Minnesota State has won its last two duals against Northern State and MSU Moorhead. With the wins, the Mustangs are now 2-3 and 2-2 in NSIC duals.

The Vikings
Augustana is currently 2-0 in NSIC duals and is on a five-dual win streak that includes victories over three nationally-ranked opponents.

Individually, the Vikings have seven different wrestlers ranked in the Super Region 5 Rankings and/or the NWCA Coaches Poll:

At 133 pounds, redshirt freshman Jack Huffman is ranked 9th in the NWCA Coaches Poll, 4th in the Super Region 5 Rankings and 16th on The Open Mat.

At 141 pounds, redshirt freshman Hunter Burnett is ranked 3rd in the Super Region 5 Rankings, 8th on The Open Mat and 10th on Flowrestling.

At 157 pounds, redshirt freshman Jacob Tvinnereim is ranked 4th in the Super Region 5 Rankings, 15th on The Open Mat and 17th on Flowrestling.

At 174 pounds, junior Ben Kelvington is ranked 8th in the NWCA Coaches Poll, 3rd in the Super Region 5 Rankings, 9th on The Open Mat and 13th on Flowrestling.

In the Super Region 5 Rankings, the Vikings also have sophomore Dylan Schuck ranked 3rd at 165 pounds, sophomore Daniel Bishop ranked 4th at 197 pounds and redshirt freshman Steven Hajas ranked 5th at 285 pounds.

Wrestler to Watch
Junior Ben Kelvington, ranked No. 8 in the nation, holds a 9-2 record and has been impressive all season. The junior has won five-consecutive bouts and has yet to lose to a Division II opponent this season.

One Last Thing
The last time the Vikings won six-consecutive duals was the 2017-18 season from Jan. 4 to Feb. 3. All of their opponents during the streak were NSIC opponents.
