Four Gophers Place at Last Chance Open

All four Gophers who competed at the Last Chance Open on February 22 in Ames, Iowa, placed in the top-four at their weights including Brent Jones who advanced to the finals.

Hosted by Iowa State, the quartet of grapplers combined for ten victories with five bonus-point wins.

Jones (141) made his run to the finals with a 16-0 technical fall followed by a pin.

Next up were Cael Carlson (157) and Caden Steffen (184) who both placed third. Both men shutout their opponents in the bronze medal match with Carlson defeating Carter Schmidt by 7-0 decision while Steffen took care of business against Jacob Schoon with an 8-0 major decision.

True freshman Sebas Swiggum (149) rounded out the group with a fourth-place finish while outscoring his competition 39-25 in four bouts.

Swiggum leads the Gophers freshman with 21 victories while Carlson is right behind with 17 of his own.
