Steveson Wins 13th Straight; Gophers fall to Hawkeyes
IOWA CITY – The University of Minnesota wrestling program fell to the top-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes 35-6 on Saturday night in front of 12,608 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
The two individual Maroon and Gold victories came from Owen Webster and Gable Steveson, both Minnesota natives.
Competing at the school his namesake, Dan Gable, made into a dynasty, heavyweight Gable Steveson made his Carver-Hawkeye debut with a 7-5 decision over No.3 Tony Cassioppi.
Steveson won the takedown battle 3-0 and still has not been taken down this season. He improves to 28-0 in duals across his two seasons in Maroon and Gold with 13 straight victories dating back to the 2019 NCAA Championships.
Webster got the dual started at 184-pounds with a 3-2 decision over Cash Wilcke, Iowa’s lone unranked starter on the night. The win gives Webster 20 in his best season in Maroon and Gold.
Kasper McIntosh made his dual debut at 165-pounds in place of the ill Bailee O’Reilly. McIntosh ultimately fell to No.2 Alex Marinelli.
Coming out intermission at 141-pounds, there were three straight bouts within a two-point margin but Iowa came out on top of all three. Two of those, at 141 and 157-pounds, went into sudden victory they were so tight.
The dual featured three lead changes but no ties.
Minnesota closes out the season next Friday as they welcome the Nebraska Cornhuskers to Dinkytown. The team will celebrate their graduating seniors during the dual including 2019 All-Americans Mitch Mckee and Devin Skatzka.
