Mavericks Finish Regular Season with 27-8 Win Over Wolves

MANKATO, Minn. — The No. 17 Minnesota State wrestling team concluded the regular season with a 27-8 win over the No. 23 Northern State Wolves on Saturday at Taylor Center.

Prior to the dual, four senior student-athletes, Lucas Hagel, Zach Johnston, Logan Saltou and Louie Sanders, were honored for their accomplishments as a Maverick wrestler.

With the win, the Mavericks finish with a 10-3 (6-2 NSIC) record, while the Wolves fall to 9-7 (2-5 NSIC).

MSU won eight of the 10 matches, including three wins by major decision.

The dual began at 125 lbs., where Trenton McManus used a first-period takedown, a second-period escape, a third-period reversal and a riding time point to win by a 6-2 decision over Landen Fischer.

Lucas Hagel was defeated by Dayne Morton by a 24-9 technical fall in the 133-pound match, but the Mavericks won the next three matches to go ahead by a 13-5 score. At 141 lbs., No. 9 Louie Sanders used four takedowns, a four-point near fall and an escape to earn a 13-4 major decision win over Kenny Jones. The 149-pound match saw a battle between No. 3 Kyle Rathman and No. 10 Caden Moore. The two wrestlers traded a takedown and an escape to end the first period tied 3-3. Rathman managed a quick escape to begin the second period and then managed a takedown to lead 6-3 after two periods. The third period saw Rathman earn two points for stalling and a riding time point to come away with a 9-3 win.

Then down 2-1 after two periods, Cooper Siebrecht earned a quick escape to begin the third period before using a takedown at 5:47 along with a riding time point to earn a 5-2 decision over Walker Carr.

MSU dropped the 165-pound bout, but No. 10 Zach Johnston got the Mavericks back on track at 174 lbs., with a 12-2 major decision win over Tanner Wiese, which started a string of four consecutive victories for the Mavericks. At 184 lbs., Trevor Turriff defeated No. 11 Marcus Placide by a 23-13 major decision. 197-pounder Matthew Blome then defeated Diego Gallegos by a 10-4 decision. David Griffet concluded the dual with a 3-2 win over Caleb Lefferdink in the heavyweight match.

The Mavericks now have two weeks off before wrestling in the NCAA Super Regionals in Sioux Falls, S.D. on Saturday, Feb. 29.
