UMary earns last bout in victory over SMSU
MARSHALL, Minn. – Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team (4-7, 3-5 NSIC) closed the regular season on Saturday afternoon, falling 18-16 to UMary (3-7, 1-4 NSIC) in the PE Gym.
After a hot-start for the Mustangs, opening the dual with three consecutive victories, the Marauders went for the next four bouts, including a win by pin to rally back for the lead.
Although the Mustangs finished with two more victories at 184 and 197, it came down to the heavyweight dual as the Mustangs entered the final bout of the night with a 16-15 lead.
UMary’s Dominic Tudor ending the dual taking the bout and earning UMary’s first conference victory with a 6-0 victory by decision.
Hunter Pfantz (125) opened the dual with an 8-6 decision victory to start the dual in the win column.
133-pounder Jackson Stauffacher led 4-0 early in his battle, but UMary’s Laken Boese fought his way back in the second period with a takedown and four-point near fall. Down 6-5 in the final 30 seconds of the third period, Stauffacher earned a two-point takedown to put the Mustangs up two bouts early on with a 7-6 decision victory.
The Mustangs kept the victories rolling as Justin Sampson (141) earned a 3-1 decision victory over Trevor Fauver to put the Mustangs up 9-0.
The Marauders picked up their first victory at 149 with a 10-5 decision over Robert Shields and trailed 9-3 before extending their winning streak at 157 as UMary’s No. 12 Braydon Huber earned a 12-5 decision victory over Nathan Moore to bring the Marauders down 9-6.
At 165, the bout came down to the final few seconds as UMary’s Payton Hume earned a 6-4 decision victory over Jacob Backlund to tie the dual at 9-9.
UMary’s No. 7 Phillip Springsteen (174) gave the Marauders their first lead of the dual at 15-9 with a win by pin at 41 seconds over Hayden Voxland.
Cole Hennen finished the weekend 2-0 with his second victory by major decision to bring the Mustangs just down one-point heading into 197.
Jackson Ryan (197) kept the Mustangs alive with a 3-1 sudden victory bout to head into the final bout of the night with a 16-15 lead.
Andrew Petersen (HWT) inevitably fell 6-0 as the Marauders earned the 18-16 victory.
Tonight’s dual was the match for SMSU seniors: Brock Buysse, Willie Meine, Nick Santos, Ben Thompson, Andrew Petersen, Kyle Green, and Cole Hennen.

Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team will compete in the NCAA Super Regional in Sioux Falls, S.D. on Saturday, Feb. 29, with action beginning at 10 a.m. Any advancing wrestlers will move on to compete at the NCAA Championships, beginning on Friday, March 13 in Sioux Falls, S.D., at the Sanford Pentagon.
