SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The Minnesota State wrestling team qualified four individuals to the NCAA Division II National Championship as the No. 18 Mavericks finished in fourth place in the team standings at the 2020 NCAA Division II Super Region 5 tournament held in Sioux Falls, S.D. Saturday.
Junior Kyle Rathman (149 lbs.) and redshirt sophomore Trevor Turriff (184 lbs.) earned trips to the national meet with second-place finishes. Junior Trenton McManus (125 lbs.) and senior Louie Sanders (141 lbs.) punched their tickets with third-place finishes.
Rathman, who holds the No. 3 ranking in his weight class, started off with a 14-0 major decision over UW-Parkside’s Nathan Hensley. He followed up with a 6-2 win over No. 6 Chase Luensman of Upper Iowa. In the championship match, Rathman dropped a close 3-2 decision to No. 2 James Pleski of St. Cloud State.
Turriff came out strong with a dominating 14-4 win over Cole Hennen of Southwest Minnesota State. He then upset second-seeded Dalton Hahn of Upper Iowa to advance to the championship match. In that match, he was pitted against No. 3 Tyree Overton of St. Cloud State. Turriff ultimately dropped the match by a 23-10 major decision.
McManus dropped his first match by an 8-2 decision to No. 8 Dean Arevalo of Minot State. After that, he won by an 11-2 major decision over Hunter Pfantz and a 6-0 decision over Ethan Cota of Augustana to battle his way back to the third-place match. In that match, McManus came away with a 4-3 win over Brandon Betancourt of St. Cloud State.
Sanders, who holds the No. 10 ranking in his weight class, dropped a pigtail match to Mason Schulz of MSU Moorhead before winning four straight matches. In his second match, Sanders pinned Kenny Jones of Northern State in 15 seconds. He followed up with a 2-1 win over Justin Sampson of Southwest Minnesota State before rebounding against Schulz with a 16-4 major decision win. In the third-place match, Sanders defeated UW-Parkside’s Pernevlon Sheppard by a 7-2 decision.
Sophomore David Griffet placed fourth at heavyweight after finishing with a 2-2 record and falling to Ezayah Oropeza of St. Cloud State by pinfall in the third-place match. Sophomore Cooper Siebrecht (157 lbs.) wrestled to a 3-2 record to earn a fifth-place finish. Also finishing in fifth were No. 11 Zach Johnston (174 lbs.) and No. 10 Matthew Blome (197 lbs.).
As a team, Minnesota State finished the tournament with 93 points in finishing fourth. No. 1 St. Cloud State totaled 155 points in claiming the top spot of the region.
