The Guillotine 2020 Academic All-State Wrestlers

The 2020 edition of The Guillotine Academic All-State honorees features 30 first-team members, 30 second-team members, 30 third-team members, and 33 honorable mention wrestlers.

One hundred twenty-seven total wrestlers, representing 59 teams, were submitted this season. Points were tallied based on current varsity wins, current state tournament placement, and cumulative high school GPA. Each of the first team wrestlers receives two certificates and a letter of recognition.

Everyone on the first team placed fifth or higher at state this year, including 13 champions and seven runners-up. First team members have an average of 46 season wins, an average season win-percentage of 93%, and an average GPA of 3.78.

Six honorees had a perfect 4.0 GPA: Jayden McLearen of Big Lake, Brody Ullyott of Detroit Lakes, Alex McPhee of Proctor/Hermantown, Eli Hunt of St. Peter, Trey Kruse of Stillwater Area, and Jose Reyes of Tri-City United.

Two nominees finished as undefeated 2020 state champions: Kaleb Haase of Redwood Valley and Bennett Tabor of Simley.

Repeat Guillotine first-team members are Owen Bjerga of Staples-Motley, Trey Kruse of Stillwater Area, Ben Lunn of Shakopee, and Canon Swanson of Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa.

First Team

Canon Swanson, 145 pounds
Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa, 12th
Canon is a five-time state placewinner and two-time finalist. He was the Class A 145-pound third-place finisher in 2020. Canon was runner-up at 126 pounds as a junior and 120 pounds as a sophomore. He also placed fifth at 113 pounds as a freshman and sixth at 106 pounds as an eighth-grader. Canon had an impressive season record of 53-1. He ended his high school career with a record of 225-29, including 112 pins. Canon’s GPA is 3.67. Honors and achievements include two-time MWCA Academic All-State, three-year team captain, three-time academic all-conference, and six-time letter winner. Future plans are to wrestle at North Dakota State University and pursue a degree in aviation. Canon’s parents are Aaron and Tami, and his coach is Jack Mueller.


Jayden McLearen, 120 pounds
Big Lake, 11th
Jayden placed fourth at state in 2020 at 120 pounds in Class AA. It was his first state tournament appearance. Jayden had a season record of 33-5. His current career record is 64-21, including 15 pins. Jayden’s GPA is 4.0. Honors and achievements include two-time Mississippi 8 All-Conference, three-time Mississippi 8 Academic All-Conference, and 2020 Academic All-Conference for cross country. Plans are to attend the University of Minnesota and study medicine. Jayden’s parents are Todd and Zakkiyya, and his coach is Ryan Prom.


Daniel Erlandson, 220 pounds
Breckenridge, 11th

Daniel is a two-time state placewinner. He finished fourth at 220 pounds in 2020 in Class A as a junior. He placed sixth at 195 pounds as a sophomore. Daniel had a season record of 38-6. His current career record is 107-32, including 66 pins. Daniel’s GPA is 3.95. Honors and achievements include team captain, Excel Award recipient, MWCA Academic All-State, junior class vice-president, academic all-conference for wrestling and football, Knowledge Bowl team captain, and A-Honor Roll – all quarters. Daniel is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to attend a four-year university and major in engineering, architecture, or business. Daniel’s parents are Eric and Patti, and his coach is Tom Haire.


Carson Tschudi, 145 pounds
Delano, 11th
Carson is a two-time state placewinner. He finished fourth at 145 pounds in 2020 in Class AA as a junior. He placed fifth at 132 pounds as a sophomore. Carson was a state qualifier at 113 pounds as an eighth-grader. Carson had a season record of 32-7. His current career record is 148-40, including 64 pins. Carson’s GPA is 3.99. Honors and achievements include team captain, two-time Wright County Conference All-Conference, and two-time All-Conference Honorable Mention. Future plans are to attend college and possibly wrestle. Carson’s parents are Dan and Tania, and his coach is Jeff Olson.


Brody Ullyott, 138 pounds
Detroit Lakes, 11th

Brody was the Class AA 138-pound runner-up in 2020 as a junior. He was a state qualifier at 113 pounds as a freshman. Brody had a season record of 43-6. His current career record is 127-51, including 48 pins. Brody’s GPA is 4.0. Honors and achievements include Section 8AA Academic All-Star and all-conference for wrestling. Future plans are to study forestry. Brody’s parents are Rob and Diane, and he is coached by his father.


Jaxson Rohman, 126 pounds
Fairmont/Martin County West, 11th

Jaxson is a three-time state finalist and five-time state placewinner. He was the Class AA 126-pound third-place finisher in 2020. Jaxson won the 113-pound title in 2018 as a freshman. He was runner-up at 120 pounds as a sophomore and 106 pounds as an eighth-grader. Jaxson also placed sixth at 106 pounds as a seventh-grader. Jaxson had an impressive season record of 52-1. His current career record is 227-18 (92.7 win %), including 91 pins. Jaxson’s GPA is 3.89. Honors and achievements include two-time State Dual Tournament All-Tournament Team and five-time all-conference. Future plans are to continue his wrestling career in college. Jaxson’s parents are Steve and Jamie, and his coach is Adam Williamson.


Will Magaard, 138 pounds
Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg, 12th
Will was a two-time state finalist and a state champion. He was the Class A 138-pound runner-up in 2020. Will won the 106-pound title in 2018 as a sophomore. He was a state qualifier as a freshman and as an eighth-grader. Will had a season record of 50-4. He ended his high school career with a record of 209-26, including 105 pins. Will’s GPA is 3.78. Honors and achievements include five-time wrestling letter winner, all-conference in Track and Cross Country, team captain since 10th grade, 35-time tournament finalist, 24-time tournament champion, nine-time tournament OW. Will is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to study exercise science at Minnesota State University Mankato. Will’s parents are Brent and Kristine, and his coach is Wes Haglund.


Gabe Nagel, 170 pounds
Little Falls, 11th
Gabe is a state champion and two-time state finalist. He won the 160-pound Class AAA title as a sophomore in 2019. Gabe was runner-up at 170 pounds in 2020 as a junior. He was a state qualifier at 145 pounds as a freshman. Gabe had an impressive season record of 41-1. His current career record is 181-31, including 108 pins. Gabe’s GPA is 3.96. Honors and achievements include 2019 and 2020 Morrison County Wrestler of the Year, 2020 MWCA Academic All-State, and 2020 Qual DECA Nationals. Future plans are to wrestle at the University of Minnesota. Gabe’s parents are Todd and Jenae, and his coach is Mike Hendrickson.


Justin Crandall, 120 pounds
LPGE-Browerville, 12th
Justin placed third at state in 2020 at 120 pounds in Class A as a senior. He was a state qualifier at 113 pounds as a sophomore. Justin had a season record of 52-8. He ended his high school career with a record of 158-48, including 45 pins. Justin’s GPA is 3.67. Honors and achievements include A-Honor Roll since 7th grade, all-conference, two-year team captain, and three-time scholar award winner. Future plans are to attend NDSU or Minnesota-Morris to study engineering or physical therapy. Justin’s parents are Dave and Tina, and his coach is Jacob Lorentz.


Kolin Baier, 195 pounds
Mankato East, 12th
Kolin won the 2020 Class AA 195-pound state title as a senior. He was a state qualifier at 182 pounds as a junior. Kolin had an impressive season record of 45-1. He ended his high school career with a record of 140-54, including 85 pins. Kolin’s GPA is 3.99. Honors and achievements include three-time all-conference, 2020 MWCA Academic All-State, and MSHSL Triple ‘A’ Award winner. Kolin is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to play football at Bethel University. Kolin’s parents are Shane and Jodi, and his coach is Jon Dierks.


Nathan Trio, 182 pounds
Maple River, 12th
Nathan was the Class A 182-pound runner-up in 2020 as a senior. He was a state qualifier at 182 pounds as a junior. Nathan had a season record of 45-5. He ended his high school career with a record of 111-36, including 66 pins. Nathan’s GPA is 3.56. Honors and achievements include two-year team captain, voted 2020 Team MVW, 2020 all-conference, two-time all-conference honorable mention, and football all-district. Future plans are to attend North Dakota State University. Nathan’s parents are John and Marla, and his coach is Dan Robbins.


Solomon Lankow, 138 pounds
Park, 12th
Solomon placed fourth at state in 2020 at 138 pounds in Class AAA as a senior. He was a state qualifier at 145 pounds as a junior. Solomon had a season record of 47-7. He ended his high school career with a record of 133-38, including 71 pins. Solomon’s GPA is 3.91. Honors and achievements include four-time Section 3AAA All-Academic Team, two-time PHS Academic Letter recipient, PHS Wrestling Awards: Team Captain (2019-20), Scholar-Athlete award (2019-20), Team MVP (2019-20), Most Dedicated Award (2018-19). Future plans are to wrestle either at Concordia College while pursuing a pre-chiropractic degree. Solomon’s parents are Christopher and Deanna, and his coaches are Jim LaBrosse and Andy Spraetz.


Kaleb Haase, 285 pounds
Redwood Valley, 12th
Kaleb is a three-time state placer winning the 285-pound Class AA title in 2020. He placed fifth at 220 pounds as a junior and as a sophomore. Kaleb finished his season undefeated with 41 wins. He ended his high school career with a record of 129-27, including 77 pins. Kaleb’s GPA is 3.42. Honors and achievements include three-year team captain, three-time Big South Conference champion, freestyle state finalist, member of Minnesota Junior Duals team, state qualifier for track and football, member of FFA, Student Rotarian, and PALS member teaching elementary students. Future plans are to wrestle at St. Cloud State University, major in business, become a financial advisor, and become a wrestling coach. Kaleb’s parents are Dan and Teressa, and his coach is Paul Carlson.


Ben Lunn, 132 pounds
Shakopee, 12th
Ben was a three-time state finalist. He was the Class AAA 132-pound runner-up in 2020 as a senior. Ben was runner-up at 120 pounds as a junior and 113 pounds as a sophomore. Ben had a season record of 46-3. He ended his high school career with a record of 154-15 (91.1 win %). Ben’s GPA is 3.94. Future plans are to wrestle at the University of Minnesota. Ben’s parents are Dan and Marcy, and his coach is Jim Jackson.


Blake West, 113 pounds
Shakopee, 11th
Blake is a two-time state placer winning the 113-pound Class AAA title in 2020. He placed fifth at 106 pounds as a freshman. Blake had an impressive season record of 51-1. His current career record is 139-6 (95.9 win %), including 76 pins. Blake’s GPA is 3.98. Honors and achievements include 2020 State Dual All-Tournament Team, 2020 MWCA Academic All-State, 2020 The Clash Scholar-Athlete Award, 2019 Fargo freestyle finalist, 2019 USA Wrestling folkstyle national champion, 2019 UWW freestyle All-American, 2019 Junior National Duals Greco All-Tournament Team, 2018 Rumble on the Red Champion, 2018 Minnesota Christmas Tournament Champion (three-time placer), 2017 Cadet National Duals Freestyle All-Tournament Team. Future plans are to wrestle at a Division 1 college and attend medical school. Blake’s parents are Jack and Reagan, and his coach is Jim Jackson.


Derek Steele, 113 pounds
Sibley East, 11th
Derek is a state champion and two-time state finalist. He won the Class A 113-pound title in 2020 as a junior. Derek was the 113-pound runner-up as a sophomore and a state qualifier as a freshman. Derek had an impressive season record of 50-2. His current career record is 140-53, including 26 pins. Derek’s GPA is 3.51. Honors and achievements include two-year team captain, two-time all-conference, two-time KNUJ Wrestler of the Week, 2020 New Ulm Journal Co-Wrestler of the Year, and 2020 MWCA Academic All-State. Future plans are to continue his wrestling career in college. Derek’s parents are Donovan and Susie, and his coach is Chris Koob.


Bennett Tabor, 220 pounds
Simley, 11th
Bennett is a two-time state placer winning the 220-pound Class AA title in 2020. He placed fourth at 195 pounds as a sophomore. Bennett finished his season undefeated with 50 wins. His current career record is 143-45, including 100 pins. Bennett’s GPA is 3.41. Honors and achievements include 2019 Super 32 4th place, 2019 cadet freestyle nationals All-American (4th place), and 2019 all-conference in football. Future plans are to wrestle at the University of Minnesota. Bennett’s parents are Barb and Matt, and his coach is Will Short.


Cael Berg, 138 pounds
Simley, 11th
Cael is a state champion, a two-time finalist, and a four-time placewinner. He won the Class AA 138-pound title in 2020 as a junior and was the 138-pound runner-up as a sophomore. Cael placed fifth at 126 pounds as a freshman and fourth at 106 pounds as an eighth-grader. Cael had a season record of 47-4. His current career record is 175-43, including 57 pins. Cael’s GPA is 3.93. Honors and achievements include part of the 2019 and 2020 Class AA state team champions, team captain, 2019 USA Wrestling 16U triple All-American (Freestyle-Greco-Folkstyle), part of the 2019 USA Wrestling 16U Duals Minnesota team champion, and 2019 Metro East All-Conference for baseball (catcher). Future plans are to wrestle for a DI program and study health science or business. Cael’s parents are Mark and Julia, and his coach is Will Short.


Ryan Sokol, 145 pounds
Simley, 11th
Ryan is a two-time state champion and a four-time placewinner. He won the Class AA 145-pound title in 2020 as a junior and the 132-pound title as a sophomore. Ryan placed third at 113 pounds as an eighth-grader and fifth at 106 pounds as a seventh-grader. Ryan had an impressive season record of 48-2. His current career record is 191-19 (91 win %), including 98 pins. Ryan’s GPA is 3.6. Honors and achievements include 2017 cadet freestyle national champion, 2019 UWW World Team Trials freestyle cadet national champion, and 2019 UWW World Championships team member. Future plans are to wrestle at Cornell University. Ryan’s parents are Estelle and Joe, and his coach is Will Short.


Wyatt Lidberg, 182 pounds
St. Michael-Albertville, 12th
Wyatt is a three-time state placewinner. He was the Class AAA 182-pound third-place finisher in 2020 as a senior. Wyatt placed third at 160 pounds as a junior and fifth at 170 pounds as a sophomore. He was a state qualifier at 160 pounds as a freshman. Wyatt had a season record of 49-6. He ended his high school career with a record of 155-39, including 58 pins. Wyatt’s GPA is 3.7. Honors and achievements include STMA Team Voted Awards: two-time Hardest Worker, Honorary Team Captain, 2018-2019 STMA Outstanding Wrestler, Cadet Freestyle All-American, two-time Wells Fargo All-Tournament State Team, three-time all-conference. Future plans are to wrestle at the University of Mary in Bismarck, South Dakota. Wyatt’s parents are Jon and Jill, and his coach is Josh Joriman.


Eli Hunt, 170 pounds
St. Peter, 12th
Eli is a two-time state placewinner. He finished fifth at 170 pounds in 2020 in Class AA as a senior. He placed sixth at 170 pounds as a junior. Eli had a season record of 41-5. He ended his high school career with a record of 148-63, including 89 pins. Eli’s GPA is 4.0. Honors and achievements include two-time Big South All-Conference, and 2019 Class AAAA Academic All-State for football. Eli is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to wrestle at Concordia-Moorhead and pursue a degree in education. Eli’s parents are Matt and Kari Leonard, and his coaches are Keith Hanson and Ryan Timmerman.


Owen Bjerga, 160 pounds
Staples-Motley, 12th
Owen is a state champion, a two-time finalist, and a three-time placewinner. He won the Class A 160-pound title in 2020 as a senior and was the 160-pound runner-up as a junior. Owen placed sixth at 138 pounds as a sophomore. He was a state qualifier at 126 pounds as a freshman and 113 pounds as an eighth-grader. Owen had an impressive season record of 45-1. He ended his high school career with a record of 201-32, including 119 pins. Owen’s GPA is 3.54. Honors and achievements include 2019 Guillotine Academic All-State First Team, three-year team captain, Student Council member, letter winner in Academics, and Mid-State Conference Most Outstanding Wrestler. Future plans are to wrestle at St. Cloud State University and pursue a degree in business or accounting. Owen’s parents are Phil and Heidi, and his coach is Mark Carlson.


Roman Rogotzke, 182 pounds
Stillwater Area, 11th
Roman won the 2020 Class AAA 182-pound state title as a junior. He was a state qualifier at 152 pounds as a sophomore, 132 pounds as a freshman, and 113 pounds as an eighth-grader. Roman had a season record of 49-4. His current career record is 185-53, including 137 pins. Roman’s GPA is 3.47. Honors and achievements include five-time academic all-section and four-time all-conference. Future plans are to wrestle for a D1 program, become an NCAA All-American, NCAA champion, graduate with honors, and be successful in business. Roman’s parents are Perry and Kelly, and his coach is Tim Hartung.


Trey Kruse, 145 pounds
Stillwater Area, 12th
Trey won the 2020 Class AAA 145-pound state title as a senior. He placed fourth at 138 pounds as a junior and fourth at 132 pounds as a sophomore. Trey was a state qualifier at 120 pounds as a freshman and 113 pounds as an eighth-grader. Trey had an impressive season record of 51-1. He ended his high school career with a record of 234-53, including 150 pins. Trey’s GPA is 4.0. Honors and achievements include three-year team captain, six-time letter winner, five-time all-conference, 2019 Guillotine Academic All-State First Team, 2020 MWCA Academic Scholarship recipient, Stillwater career wins and pins record-holder, MSHSL Class AAA State Duals All-Tournament Team, and 2019 Minnesota Christmas Tournament champion and Bi-State Tournament champion (Tournament MVP). Trey is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to major in engineering and wrestle in the Big Ten Conference at Purdue University. Trey’s parents are Troy and Lisa, and his coach is Tim Hartung.


Jace Paplow, 170 pounds
Tracy-Milroy-Balaton/Westbrook-Walnut Grove, 12th
Jace was the Class A 170-pound runner-up in 2020 as a senior. He was a state qualifier at 170 pounds as a junior. Jace had a season record of 46-3. He ended his high school career with a record of 183-52, including 69 pins. Jace’s GPA is 3.71. Honors and achievements include 2020 MWCA Scholarship recipient, KNUJ Wrestler of the Week, two-year team captain, helped lead the team to three section dual titles and three top-four Class A team finishes, third in all-time wins in program history, and 2020 State Dual All-Tournament Team. Future plans are to wrestle at Southwest Minnesota State University and major in agronomy and business. Jace’s parents are Lee and Tisha, and his coach is Karl Campbell.


Bennett Weber, 285 pounds
Waconia, 12th
Bennett won the 2020 Class AAA 285-pound state title as a senior. He was a state qualifier at 285 pounds as a junior. Bennett had a season record of 46-3. He ended his high school career with a record of 113-35, including 50 pins. Bennett’s GPA is 3.85. Honors and achievements include three-time all-conference, five-time letter winner, and Academic All-State for football. Future plans are to play football at the University of North Dakota and study chemical engineering or biology. Bennett’s parents are Stacey and Luke, and his coach is Nick Hackman.


Cael Swensen, 138 pounds
Wayzata, 11th
Cael is a three-time state placer winning the 138-pound Class AAA title in 2020 as a junior. He placed fifth at 120 pounds as a sophomore and fourth at 106 pounds as a freshman. Cael had an impressive season record of 52-1. His current career record is 184-37, including 87 pins. Cael’s GPA is 3.76. Honors and achievements include two-time USA Wrestling Fargo All-American (Junior Greco-Roman national runner-up), and two-time Minnesota Christmas Tournament runner-up. Future plans are to continue his wrestling career in college. Cael’s parents are Eric and Debra, and he is coached by his father.


Cayden Homme, 182 pounds
Wayzata, 11th
Cayden Homme was the Class AAA 182-pound runner-up in 2020 as a junior. He was a state qualifier at 160 pounds as a sophomore. Cayden Homme had a season record of 37-9. His current career record is 106-32, including 68 pins. Cayden Homme’s GPA is 3.69. Future plans are to continue his wrestling career in college Cayden Homme’s parents are Darrin and Greta, and his coach is Eric Swensen.


Kade Sammons, 132 pounds
Windom/Mountain Lake, 11th
Kade placed third at state in 2020 at 132 pounds in Class A. It was his first state tournament appearance. Kade had a season record of 50-4. His current career record is 143-41, including 33 pins. Kade’s GPA is 3.7. Honors and achievements include four-time All-Big South Conference, Big South Conference champion, Rumble on the Red Tournament third place, A-Honor Roll, all-conference honorable mention for baseball, and all-district for football. Future plans are to attend a four-year college and wrestle. Kade’s parents are Josh and Nicole, and his coaches are Nick Kulseth and Travis Elg.


Ryan Henningson, 120 pounds
Winona, 12th
Ryan is a state champion, two-time finalist, and three-time placer. He won the Class AAA 120-pound title in 2020 as a senior. Ryan was the 113-pound runner-up as a junior, and he placed third at 106 pounds as a sophomore. Ryan had an impressive season record of 47-2. He ended his high school career with a record of 180-25, including 101 pins. Ryan’s GPA is 3.75. Honors and achievements include 2020 Section 1AAA Wrestler of the Year and Winona career record-holder for most wins and most pins. Future plans are to wrestle at North Dakota State University and pursue a mechanical engineering degree. Ryan’s parents are Curt and Abbie, and his coach is Joe Hoialmen.
