The four-time state champion hails from Greeley, Colorado.
Isaiah Salazar made many trips to the top of the podium in his high school wrestling career, and as he makes his transition into college wrestling, he plans to spend his next four years repeating that same success in the Maroon & Gold.
Salazar recorded an exceptional 143-6 record in his high school career, and that dominance earned him four Colorado state titles, three of which for high school powerhouse Windsor High School. The blue-chip recruit from Greeley, Colorado saw an unblemished record in his last two years of competition, and was also a top-5 nationally ranked wrestler in the 182-pound weight class.
The incoming freshman now has the opportunity to showcase his skills at the Division-I level as one of the brightest faces in this year’s recruiting class, but before he begins his quest to become the next great Golden Gopher wrestler, allow us here at GopherSports to introduce Isaiah Salazar to you.
GopherSports: What made you choose the University of Minnesota?
Salazar: I chose the University of Minnesota because they were there for me and showed interest in me since the beginning. Coach Brandvold reached out to me and told me what Minnesota had to offer, and after I got to meet him, Coach Becker and Coach Eggum at the Air Force dual in Colorado, they had seemed to be my top school choice. After I had my campus tour and got to meet and hear from other wrestlers on the team, it just felt like the perfect fit. The atmosphere and the city itself was really awesome to see and I wanted to be a part of it. I feel like with the incredible coaching staff and teammates, this is where I will be able to become the greatest possible version of myself, not only as a wrestler but as an individual inside and outside of the classroom.
GS: What makes you the most excited about being a Golden Gopher?
Salazar: What makes me most excited about being a Gopher is that I’ve never had family attend the University of Minnesota, or a large university in general, so I look forward to coming out of college with a degree that will set me up after my time here, while also creating my legacy as a wrestler.
GS: How would you describe your wrestling style?
Salazar: I would describe my wrestling style as patient and being able to wrestle through all positions while remaining calm. When wrestling on my feet, I take the time to set up quality shots, and when I attack it’s fast. On top, I am a tough rider always looking to turn my opponents and on bottom my goal is always to be up and out looking to be offensive again.
GS: Do you have any hobbies or special interests?
Salazar: I love to be active and be outside, whether it’s fishing, running, hiking, etc. I also like to play video games and I enjoy helping and being around others.
GS: What other sports or activities did you participate in during high school?
Salazar: I played Baseball, Football, and Track & Field.
GS: What is your planned major?
Salazar: Civil Engineering and/or a Business degree.
