Minnesota Wrestling Coaches Association Report

With relief and optimism, I write this to inform you that we will have a wrestling season. On October 1st, the MSHSL Board of Directors passed a motion for the wrestling season to begin on November 30th. The efforts of many and the positive dialog promoting a safe return to wrestling were a significant factor in working with the MSHSL. A special thanks go out to all those who passionately support student-athletes and their opportunity to participate this season.

Due to sectional football concluding on November 28th, the wrestling season schedule is:

  • November 30th – Start of the season
  • December 10th – First date of competition
  • February 13th – Last day of the regular season
  • February 15th – Potential first day of the postseason
  • March 6th – Potential last day of the postseason

Wrestling is slated for a 14-week season. This season will include 16 competition dates – limited to dual and triangular events – with a match count of 32. The MSHSL has also left space for a possible state tournament and will make this decision at a later date – we are in communication with the MSHSL on potential scenarios. This format falls in line with reductions made to all other sports.

With the season on the horizon, please continue to adhere to the rules, follow protocol, and work with the governing bodies that have put in place regulations. While the uncertainty of a postseason is looming, we must focus on the controllable and not miss the opportunities provided to us. Create ideas, not complaints. Continue to reach out to other coaches, and use this time to expand your coaching portfolio.

The virus has posed uncertainties and challenges to many people and groups. We are not unique in that, and we are advised not to make it any more personal. Now that we have an opportunity for a season, ask yourself the following question: were we trying to save a season, save our sport, program, jobs, or help our athletes? We all have goals and agendas that we would love to achieve – a championship run, personal aspirations, and, most importantly, helping young people achieve their best. Consider the seniors who will not be granted a red-shirt season and what this year means to them. Consider the young athlete who chooses to join wrestling this year – the impact coaches, parents, fans, teammates, and our sport can have on them.

We ask our athletes to prepare and trust the process. Remember, flexibility is its own kind of strength, and adaptability allows us to make sense of the task and move in the right direction. I ask that you make an effort and take the time to attend the virtual 2020 MWCA Fall Clinic on Saturday, October 31st. The MWCA will be collaborating with Coaches Insider to provide a collection of live and recorded sessions throughout the day. The cost for MWCA Members will be $5. Non-members will pay $40 and receive a 2020-2021 MWCA Membership. Look for more information to be posted soon.

Coaches, at our very best, aspire to be leaders and help others. It is an honor to share this profession with all of you. If we spend our time and energy wisely, we can survive and thrive.

Make your luck and make a difference.
