The Sky is the Limit For Auggies Women

By Matt Krumrie

It was a strong inaugural season for the Augsburg Auggies women's wrestling team, the first and only women's collegiate wrestling program in the state of Minnesota. The team finished sixth at the Women's Collegiate Wrestling Association National Championships (follows international freestyle rules) and 9th at the National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships (follows NCAA/folkstyle rules).

Five Auggies wrestlers earned All-American honors, led by national champion Emily Shilson of Maple Grove/Mounds View High School, who won the 109-pound national title in both the WCWA and NCWWC divisions. Vayle-Rae Baker (123/WCWA 2nd/NCWWC 6th); Gabby Skidmore (130/WCWA 2nd/NCWWC 6th); and Marlynne Deede (155/NCWWC 6th) all also earned All-American honors.

In early November, Shilson won the 50KG (110 pounds) title at the United World Wrestling Junior Nationals and the 50KG title at the USA Wrestling Under-23 National Championships, going 9-0 with six wins by technical fall. In college competition, Shilson was 14-0 with six pins and six technical falls, with just two of her matches going beyond the first period. Her dad Chad is also a volunteer assistant coach with Augsburg.
