Hajas’ Victory Leads Augustana Past No. 22 Parkside
KENOSHA, Wis. — A back-and-forth wrestling dual came down to the wire Saturday afternoon in De Simone Gymnasium with Augustana 285-pounder Steven Hajas preserving the Viking victory over No. 22 Wisconsin-Parkside. The Vikings move to 1-0 on the young season and have now defeated the Rangers in three-consecutive duals.
“It was great to finally get out on the mat and compete,” Augustana head coach Jason Reitmeier said. “We needed this as a team, as a staff and as a program.
“This was a good win against a tough team. I’m proud of our effort. There’s a lot of positives to take from today and a lot of things to work and improve on.”
Down 8-0 early, after a couple of Parkside major decisions in the 125 and 133 pound bouts, sophomore Jack Huffman logged the first Vikings’ victory of the season. After a quiet first period, Huffman pinned his opponent early in the second period of the 141 pound bout to bring the dual score to 8-6.
Sophomore, and No. 10 ranked, Hunter Burnett followed Huffman with a pin of his own in the 149 pound bout to give Augustana its first lead of the day at 12-8. In the 157 pound bout, redshirt-sophomore Tyler Wagener took his opponent down three times and logged an 8-2 win to give the Vikings a 15-8 lead.
A loss in the 165 pound match moved the score to 15-11, however, redshirt-freshman Cade Mueller recorded four ferocious takedowns in the 174 pound bout en route to a 10-6 win and 18-11 Augustana lead.
Parkside victories in the 184 and 197 pound matches moved the score to 18-17 in favor of the Vikings and set the stage for a dramatic winner-take-all 285-pound bout between Augustana’s No. 11 ranked Steven Hajas and Parkside’s Rodsean Graham.
Hajas and Graham traded escapes in the first and second period and were deadlocked at 1-1 midway through the third period. Hajas then recorded a clutch escape, following an injury timeout, and followed with a dual-clinching takedown for the 4-1 victory with 21-17 as the final score.
