Augustana Hits The Road For SMSU Dual

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The Augustana wrestling team is on the road for the final time during the 2021 regular season Thursday at 7 p.m. against Southwest Minnesota State. The Mustangs are the fourth NSIC foe the Vikings wrestle in 2021 with just two remaining on the schedule after Thursday.

The Event
The Vikings head to Marshall, Minnesota, Thursday afternoon and will wrestle the Mustangs inside SMSU’s PE Gym. Fans will not be permitted to watch the dual in person, however, live video and live stats will be available on

The Mustangs
Southwest Minnesota State comes into its matchup with Augustana at 1-1 with an 18-16 win against MSU Moorhead on Jan. 7 and a 28-6 loss to Wisconsin-Parkside on Jan. 22. The Mustangs also feature a nationally-ranked wrestler on their roster in senior Jackson Ryan. Ryan is ranked No. 5 at 197 pounds.

The Vikings
Augustana comes into its matchup with SMSU at 1-2 after a loss to No. 1 St. Cloud State last weekend. The Vikings took home three victories in the dual including sophomore and No. 9-ranked Hunter Burnett’s victory over St. Cloud’s No. 1-ranked Jake Barzowski. Burnett’s victory over Barzowski marks the second-consecutive season in which he has taken down a No. 1-ranked wrestler.

Fellow sophomore Steven Hajas joins Burnett on the list of ranked Vikings and comes into the SMSU dual ranked No. 10 at 285 pounds. Burnett and Hajas are both 2-1 on the season.

The Vikings are 30-5 in the all-time series with the Mustangs, with Augustana currently on a six-dual win streak. Overall, the Vikings have won 19 of the last 20 duals against SMSU, conceding only one loss in the 2000s.

Wrestler to Watch
Redshirt-freshman Cade Mueller has put together a nice 2-1 stretch for the Vikings at 174 pounds this season. Mueller’s two wins have come via a dominating four takedown performance against Wisconsin-Parkside’s Ryan Neu and a dramatic last-second finish against St. Cloud State’s Dominic Murphy.

One Last Thing
Sophomore Hunter Burnett has now taken down a No. 1-ranked wrestler in consecutive seasons. During his 2019-20 campaign, Burnett defeated No. 1 Wesley Dawkins in a 9-4 decision in the 141-pound bout of Augustana’s dual victory over Nebraska-Kearney. Last Sunday against St. Cloud State, Burnett defeated No. 1 Jake Barzowski in a 4-2 decision in the 149-pound bout.
