Augustana hosts No. 1 St. Cloud State in first home dual

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The Augustana wrestling team is back at home and set to wrestle inside the Elmen Center Thursday at 7 p.m. against the No. 1-ranked St. Cloud State Huskies. St. Cloud State is the third-consecutive top-25 team the Vikings will square off against.

It’s been 345 days since Augustana has hosted a wrestling dual inside the Elmen Center and in 2021 amidst a pandemic, it will look a little bit different. Due to COVID-19 protocols, attendance will be limited to family members of Viking wrestlers only. As always, however, live video and live streaming will be available for the dual at GoAugie.com/Live.

The Huskies
St. Cloud State comes into its matchup with Augustana at 1-0 after defeating UMary 31-3 on Jan. 7. The Huskies bring seven ranked wrestlers into the matchup with four of those wrestlers at No. 1 in their respective weight classes.

The Vikings
Augustana defeated No. 22 Wisconsin-Parkside on Jan. 9 but fell to No. 12 Minnesota State on Jan. 14 to move to 1-1 with four duals left on the season. The Vikings are receiving six national votes in the NWCA Division II Top-25 Poll and have three wrestlers nationally-ranked: sophomore Hunter Burnett is No. 10 at 149 pounds, junior Daniel Bishop is No. 12 at 197 pounds and Steven Hajas is No. 11 at 285 pounds.

The Vikings are 21-22 in the all-time series with the Huskies.

One Last Thing
A win over the Huskies this Thursday would make it back-to-back seasons in which the Vikings have taken down a top-five nationally-ranked opponent with Augustana defeating Nebraska-Kearney last season when they were ranked No. 2 in the country.
