Potential Matchups – Purdue
The Minnesota-Purdue dual could feature three ranked matchups, including top 10 battles at 125 and 157. At 125, No. 9 Patrick McKee will face No. 6 Devin Schroder in a rematch of last year’s dual meeting. Schroder won the match by technical fall as McKee would go on to miss the next four regular-season duals due to injury.
At 157, No. 7 Brayton Lee could meet No. 5 Kendall Coleman. Lee defeated the Boilermakers’ 149-pounder Griffin Parriott in overtime a year ago.
At 184, Owen Webster could face No. 10 Max Lyons for the second straight year. Webster earned an 8-6 decision in 2020.
Potential Matchups – Rutgers
The Gophers-Scarlet Knights matchup could feature two rematches. At 165, junior Bailee O’Reilly advanced to the ninth-place match at the 2020 B1G Championships with a 3-2 decision against Brett Donner.
At heavyweight, junior Gable Steveson won both meetings against Christian Colucci by technical fall during his freshman season. After a 17-2 technical fall in the dual, he opened the 2019 B1G Championships with a 21-6 technical fall.
The lone ranked matchup in the dual will likely be at 125 between No. 9 Patrick McKee and No. 15 Nic Aguilar. It would be McKee’s fifth ranked foe in his first six matches.
The Series with Purdue
The Golden Gophers are 40-8-2 all-time against Purdue, including a 1-1 record in neutral site meetings (at Northwestern in 1968 and 1985). Minnesota has won 11 in a row in the series and is 18-1 since 1993. Purdue’s last win was an 18-15 victory in Minneapolis on Feb. 1, 2004.
Minnesota won seven of 10 bouts in last year’s 27-12 win against Purdue at Maturi Pavilion (1/31/20). Bailee O’Reilly gave the Gophers a 5-3 lead with a tech. fall at 165. After wins from Owen Webster and Garrett Joles, Gable Steveson had a 25-10 tech. fall against Thomas Penola. Boo Dryden and Brayton Lee also had wins at 133 and 149, respectively.
The Series with Rutgers
Minnesota and Rutgers have met just four times, all of which came after Rutgers joined the Big Ten for the 2014-15 season. The Gophers have won the four previous meetings with two of the victories coming in Piscataway, N.J.
