Auggie men’s wrestlers win 12 of 15 over Rams

MINNEAPOLIS — Winning 12 of 15 bouts, including 10 by bonus-point margins, the Augsburg University men’s wrestling team had another strong effort in a non-scored dual meet against Cornell College on Sunday afternoon at Si Melby Hall.

Augsburg wrestlers claimed five pins and five major decisions among the 12 wins over Cornell. Augsburg entered the match ranked No. 9 in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III national rankings.

Solomon Nielsen (SR, Luverne, Minn./Luverne HS), ranked No. 2 nationally at 174 pounds, improved to 5-0 on the season with his fourth bonus-point win, a 3:56 pin of Colin Honderd. Nielsen now has 25 pins among his 83 wins (83-18) in his college career.

No. 6-ranked 184-pounder Nick Rogge (JR, Eastman, Wis./Prairie du Chien HS) improved to 7-0 on the year with his second pin and sixth bonus-point decision, scoring a 1:55 pin of Zachary Finn.

Justin Stauffacher (SO, Belle Plaine, Minn./Belle Plaine HS (Scott West)), now ranked No. 8 nationally at 125 pounds, picked up his 20th career win (20-11) and moved to 3-0 with a 1:55 pin of Jonah Kokin.

Two Auggie first-year wrestlers gained their first collegiate pins on Sunday. Carson Murray (FY, Des Moines, Iowa/Dowling Catholic HS) scored a 1:25 match-ender over Nathan Bednarczyk at 125 pounds, and Trevor Pearson (FY, Mapleton, Minn./Maple River HS) had the quickest pin of the day, a 1:05 win over Kokin at 125.

Charlie Pickell (FY, Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS), ranked No. 7 nationally at 133 pounds, scored a 14-0 major decision over Evan Husko, improving to 5-0 on the season with his third bonus-point win.

Bentley Schwanebeck-Ostermann (SO, Loyal, Wis./Marshfield HS) improved to 8-0 on the year with his fourth bonus-point win, a 16-4 major decision over Treyten Steffen at 197.

Also picking up major decision wins were Adam Mickelson (SO, Lakeville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) at 133, Aedon Oberdorfer (FY, St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park HS) at 141 and Tim Mandyck (SR, Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids HS) at 285.

FOR THE FOES
Spencer Roth had the lone pin of the day for Cornell, a 4:26 win at 174 pounds.

Husko scored a 16-2 major decision win at 133, and Isaac Boucher scored a 9-5 win at 197.

Augsburg will compete at the NWCA Division III Coaches Association National Championships on March 12-13 at the Xtream Arena in Coralville, Iowa.
