LEBANON, Ill. — Augsburg University women’s wrestlers competed against some of the top collegiate competitors in the country on Sunday at the McKendree University Bearcat Scramble.
No team results were kept in the tournament, which featured round-robin individual competition between five teams all ranked in the top seven in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association’s NCAA national rankings — No. 1 McKendree (Ill.), No. 3 Emmanuel (Ga.), No. 4 Colorado Mesa, No. 5 North Central (Ill.) and No. 7 Augsburg. Eleven Auggies competed in the tournament, the first for Augsburg in its truncated 2021 campaign.
Top-ranked 109-pounder Emily Shilson (SO, Maple Grove, Minn./Mounds View HS) posted a first-period pin and two technical falls in her weight class. She beat No. 3-ranked Natalie Reyna of McKendree 10-0 in 1:57, then topped No. 5-ranked Carly Valleroy of McKendree 11-1 in 4:11.
Marlynne Deede (SO, Springville, Utah/Springville HS), ranked No. 2 nationally at 155 pounds, went 4-1 on the day, with her lone loss coming to top-ranked Kayla Marano of Emmanuel. She claimed two first-period technical falls, pinned No. 5-ranked Malea Palahniuk of North Central in 3:00, and beat No. 6-ranked Kelly Jimenez of McKendree 10-8.
No. 4-ranked 130-pounder Gabby Skidmore (SO, Spooner, Wis./Cumberland HS) went 2-1 in her competition, scoring a 1:25 pin of Colorado Mesa’s Nanen Aguilar and a 20-second pin of North Central’s Abby Eisenbeis.
Vayle-Rae Baker (SO, Benton, Pa./Wyoming Seminary HS), ranked No. 7 nationally at 123 pounds, moved up to 130 and went 2-1, claiming a 39-second, 10-0 technical fall win over Eisenbeis and a 4:48, 17-6 technical fall of Aguilar.
Melissa Jacobs (SO, Belle Plaine, Minn./Belle Plaine HS (Scott West)) went 4-3 at 191 pounds, while Kahlea Jolly (SO, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) went 2-2 at 143, and Destynie Pacheco (SO, El Paso, Texas/Pebble Hills HS) went 2-2 at 155. Savannah Vold (JR, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS), Kya Rybachek (FY, Mountain Iron, Minn./Hibbing HS), Hannah Michael (SO, La Porte City, Iowa/Union HS) and Sierra Brown Ton (JR, Allen, Texas/Einstein HS) also competed at the meet for the Auggies.
Augsburg is scheduled to compete at the National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling Championships (NCWWC) Northwest Qualifying Tournament on Feb. 19-20 at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
