NCAA Regional Next Up for Augustana Wrestling

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — After a six dual regular season in which the Augustana wrestling team went 3-3, the Vikings are set to compete in the NCAA Super Region 5 Tournament Friday In Aberdeen, South Dakota. The event begins at noon.

Northern State will host the tournament inside Wachs Arena and will be allowing 1,500 fans (25% capacity) to attend. More ticket information, fan guidelines and COVID-19 protocols for the event can be found here.

The Competition
With the addition of Wisconsin-Parkside to NSIC wrestling, the Super Region 5 Tournament is now made up of all 10 NSIC wrestling institutions. With just six duals on the schedule this season, Augustana will see Minot State, Northern State and UMary wrestlers for the first time on Saturday.

The Vikings

125 – Ethan Cota – Senior
Cota wrestled just once during the shortened season, however, he posted a strong 16-14 record during his 2019-20 campaign and sits just three wins shy of 50 for his career. A strong regional showing could propel him to the half-century mark.

133 – Brandon Carroll – Senior
Carroll, named Super Region 3 Freshman of the Year after qualifying for nationals in 2016-17, went 4-2 this season with two falls and nine takedowns. The senior last saw regional action during the 2017-18 season where he went 2-2.

141 – Jack Huffman – Sophomore
Huffman comes into the regional tournament at 3-2 with one fall and four takedowns. He also owns a win against a nationally-ranked wrestler, defeating No. 11 Tate Murty of Upper Iowa in an 8-4 decision on Feb. 4.

149 – Jebben Keyes – Senior
Keyes went 4-1 this season with one fall and one major decision. The senior also captured his 50th career win on Jan. 24 against St. Cloud State.

157 – Tyler Wagener – Redshirt-Sophomore
Wagener logged a 3-2 record on the season with six takedowns. The redshirt-sophomore last saw regional action as a freshman during the 2018-19 season where he went 3-2, earning him fifth-place at the tournament.

165 – Dylan Schuck – Junior
Schuck went 3-3 on the season with one tech fall, one major decision, three four-point near falls and five takedowns. The junior will be making his regional debut on Saturday.

174 – Cade Mueller – Redshirt-Freshman
Mueller led the Vikings in wins in 2020-21 with a 5-1 record, one major decision and 11 takedowns. The redshirt-freshman also jumped into the national rankings after defeating No. 8-ranked Myron Crawford of Upper Iowa in a 4-2 decision on Feb. 4. Mueller will also be making his regional debut come Saturday.

184 – No. 11 Kolby Kost – Sophomore
Kost went 3-1 this season with two major decisions and tied with teammate Cade Mueller for the team lead in takedowns with 11. One of his major decisions (12-1) came over No. 8-ranked Dalton Hahn of Upper Iowa on Feb. 4.

197 – Daniel Bishop – Senior
Bishop went 1-5 this season with one tech fall which moved him into sole possession of first-place in career tech falls at Augustana. The 23-4 victory over MSU Moorhead’s Steven Abbott gave Bishop 23 career tech falls, one more than previous record holder Todd Kendle (1985-89).

285 – Steven Hajas – Sophomore
Hajas, a returning national qualifier from the 2019-20 season, went 4-2 this season with one fall. Last season, Hajas went 2-1 at the regional tournament to secure a spot at nationals.

One Last Thing
25 wrestlers from Super Region 5 will qualify for the NCAA DII Championships in St. Louis, Missouri, with the top two finishers in each weight class guaranteed a spot.
