MARSHALL Minn.- The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team (1-3, 1-3 NSIC) will return to action for the final week of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference duals on Thursday, Feb. 11, going up against Minot State (0-5, 0-4 NSIC) at 7 p.m. in the MSU Dome in Minot, N.D.
SERIES HISTORY: SMSU holds an 8-2 advantage over the Minot State in a series that started in 1970. The Mustangs won last year’s match-up against the Beavers 22-15 and have won seven of the last eight matches. The two losses SMSU has against MSU have been on the road, including the last match in Minot on Feb. 9, 2019.
SMSU NOTES: SMSU looks to move up in the NSIC standings by securing a victory against a winless Minot State team. SMSU suffered a tough 18-16 defeat last week against undefeated Northern State. Hayden Voxland would start the dual off at 174 and would go on to win the first three bouts against NSU, with Hayden Voxland winning at 174, Caden Steffen at 184, and Jackson Ryan at 197. SMSU would earn a victory at 133, with a major decision by Jackson Stauffacher. Luke Peterson would earn the final victory for the Mustangs at 149.
with senior Jackson Ryan earning his 77th career victory and remaining undefeated for the 2020-21 season.
SMSU RECORDS: Jackson Ryan’s 4-2 win last Thursday, marking his 77th career victory, moved him up to No. 17 overall in SMSU career wins.
NATIONAL RANKINGS: SMSU has one individual ranked in the first regular-season NWCA national rankings released on Jan. 22 with 2020 NCAA National Qualifier, Jackson Ryan (4-0), fifth at 197 pounds.
REGIONAL RANKINGS: In the latest Super Region V rankings (02/03/2021), SMSU has three individuals ranking among the top six. Caden Steffen is ranked sixth at 184, Jacob Dykes is number four at 285, and Jackson Ryan is second at 197.
MINOT STATE NOTES: The Beavers enter Thursday’s dual with a winless record on the season going 0-5 overall and 0-4 in the NSIC having to find another opponent during the second week of the season due to the match against St. Cloud State being canceled. Minot State faced UMary which was considered a non-conference dual. The Beavers would lose both times against UMary along with falling to Minnesota State University, Northern State, and Minnesota State University Moorhead. The Beavers have two nationally ranked individuals, the first being Keegan Berry (5-0) at 184 who is ranked 14th, while Jordan Will is ranked 10th at 285. Minot State head coach Evan Forde is in his sixth season with a record of 22-70.
