SMSU falls against Northern State in close 18-16 defeat

MARSHALL Minn.- The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team (1-3, 1-3 NSIC) competed in its last Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference home dual of the 2020-21 season, suffering an 18-16 loss against Northern State (4-0, 4-0 NSIC) in the PE Gym Thursday night.

With SMSU being allowed to have fans back on campus, the Mustangs celebrated “Senior Night” honoring the team’s lone senior, Jackson Ryan. He would earn his 77th career victory in Thursday night’s dual with a 4-2 decision taking his overall record to 77-50 and making him a perfect 4-0 on the season.

SMSU opened the dual at 174 with Hayden Voxland going against Tanner Wiese. Voxland was in the driver seat through this entire match earning a 5-2 decision. The Mustangs would continue the success with Caden Steffen and Ryan both earning wins at the 184 and 197 weights. Steffen’s victory came on a riding time point that would give him the 2-1 decision. Ryan was in control of his match as well, earning an escape and a take down in the second period putting him up 3-1 and earning a riding time point in the third period to give him the 4-2 decision.

Jacob Dykes suffered the first defeat on the night for the team, with a 3-2 decision in favor of Ali’l Loyola who was able to get a reversal against Dykes late in the second period, and with a riding time point awarded he secured a victory at 285 and getting the Wolves on the board.

SMSU’s Ben Emrich would be defeated by Michael Bigler at 125 with a 7-2 decision putting NSU within three points in team score down 9-6. SMSU and NSU would go back and forth starting with Stauffacher earning a 15-2 major decision against Ty Atloff, Justin Sampson falling at 3:57 mark at 141 that put NSU within one point of SMSU (13-12). Luke Peterson would earn a 7-4 decision putting SMSU up 16-12. The final two bouts were claimed by NSU with Nathan Moore losing a 4-2 decision and Carter Marx losing a 5-1 decision, giving NSU the 18-16 win.

Southwest Minnesota State will be back in action next Thursday, Feb. 11, at Minot State starting at 7 p.m.
