Three Mavericks Win Individual Titles as Minnesota State Places Third at NCAA DII Super Region V Tournament

Aberdeen, S.D. — Led by a trio of individual titles, Minnesota State placed third in the team standings at the 2020-21 NCAA Division II Super Region V tournament held in Aberdeen, S.D., Saturday.

Senior Kyle Rathman (149 lbs.), junior Trevor Turriff (174 lbs.) and senior Trenton McManus (125 lbs.) all claimed first-place finishes for the Mavericks.

Rathman, a two-time All-American who entered the weekend rated second in NCAA Division II, started off with a bye before running the table with three straight victories. The Apple Valley, Minn., native who now stands 9-0 for the year, won by technical fall over Angel Rios (MSU Moorhead), and decisioned Wyatt Turnquist (Northern State) 7-4 before claiming the regional title with a 7-0 decision over St. Cloud State’s Garrett Aldrich.

Turriff, rated #2 in the country, received a bye and then proceeded to claim a 13-2 major decision over Cole Huss (Northern State) and an 8-4 decision over Devin Donovan (SCSU) before claiming the regional title with a 9-5 over U-Mary’s Max Bruss. The three wins gives Turriff a 9-0 record on the year.

McManus, rated eighth in NCAA Division II coming into the weekend, is now 8-1 on the year after picking up three consecutive wins for the regional championship. After a first-round bye, the Adams, Wis., native picked up a 9-1 decision over Jeremy Leintz (U-Mary) and a 6-2 decision Kaden Anderlik (Upper Iowa) before gaining a 5-1 win in the championship match vs. MSU-Moorhead’s Cole Jones.

After a bye and a loss, junior Brock Luthens won three straight matches before falling in the third-place match at 133.

Junior Cooper Siebrecht, wrestling at 157, went 3-2 at the tournament in finishing fourth.

As a team, Minnesota State finished the tournament with 59.5 points in finishing fourth. No. 1 St. Cloud State totaled 116.5 points in claiming regional title. Upper Iowa was second with 63.5 points.

The Mavericks will compete in the NCAA Division II National Championships in Sioux Falls, S.D., March 13-14.
