Cobbers Send 10 To NWCA DIII Meet

MOORHEAD, Minn. — Cole Kubesh and Gabe Zierden highlight a group of 10 Cobbers headed to the National Coaches Wrestling Association (NWCA) DIII Championship Meet on Mar. 12-13 at the Xtream Arena in Coralville, Iowa. The NWCA meet is in lieu of the NCAA National Championship Meet that was cancelled earlier in the year.

Kubesh is seeded No.2 in the 125-lb weight class while Zierden is No.4 at 197. The Cobbers have two other wrestlers who are also seeded in their weight class. Senior Alex Skaare is No.7 at 174 and sophomore Cade Lundeen is No.10 at 141.

Kubesh is 1-0 on the year with his win coming in the Cobbers’ exhibition dual with St. John’s. He posted a 6-3 decision over Gabriel Ramirez. Kubesh is 23-9 in the past two seasons and earned a spot at the NCAA National Meet last season.

Zierden is 2-0 on the year with both matches coming in the team’s last competition against RCTC. Zierden came away with bonus-point wins in his bouts. He pinned Tristen Wilson in the dual portion of the day and then recorded a tech fall against Mason Schmid in the extra matches. Zierden is 24-10 in the past two years, and like Kubesh, was schedule to compete at the NCAA National Meet last year.

Skaare is 2-0 on the year. He pinned Logan Edwards from St. John’s and then came up with a 5-0 decision against RCTC. He is 13-10 over the past two seasons and finished seventh at last year’s NCAA Upper Midwest Regional.

Lundeen is the fourth seeded wrestler for the Cobbers. Last year as a freshman he went 20-13 and was fifth at the Upper Midwest Regional at 141. Lundeen is 1-0 in 2021 with a pin against Matt Frost of RCTC.
