Devos, Sloan receive at-large NCAA berths

INDIANAPOLIS – South Dakota State’s Cade DeVos and Tanner Sloan received at-large selections Tuesday to next week’s NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, bringing the number of Jackrabbits slated to compete in the event to five.

A redshirt freshman from Altoona, Iowa, DeVos has compiled a 13-9 record in the 157-pound weight class in his first season in the lineup. DeVos posted a fourth-place finish at last weekend’s Big 12 Wrestling Championship, but only three spots were allocated for automatic berths at the conference meet.

Sloan, a sophomore from Alburnett, Iowa, earned his second nationals berth with the at-large selection. He entered the Big 12 Championship as the top seed at 197 pounds with an undefeated record, but dropped a pair of matches before withdrawing from the tournament due to injury, placing sixth and out of the automatic qualifying spots. Sloan, 14-2 overall, compiled a 21-6 record last season and was named a second-team All-American by the National Wrestling Coaches Association after the 2020 NCAA meet was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Earning automatic qualifying spots out of this year’s Big 12 Wrestling Championship for the Jackrabbits were senior 125-pounder Danny Vega and sophomores Zach Price (133 pounds) and Clay Carlson (141 pounds).
