Russell and McKee Qualify for Olympic Trials

FORT WORTH, TEXAS – Gopher alums Sean Russell and Mitch McKee finished first and second, respectively, at the Last Chance Qualifier to advance to next week’s U.S. Olympic Wrestling Trials. The duo joins 2021 NCAA Heavyweight Champion Gable Steveson in the trials in Fort Worth, Texas, April 2-3.

Seeded sixth at 57kg, Russell upset the top three seeds capped by a 12-4 win against No. 1 Zane Richards of Titan Mercury Wrestling Club. He was a three-time NCAA qualifier out of Edinboro before transferring to Minnesota prior to the 2018-19 season. Russell finished third at the 2019 Big Ten Championships and went 2-2 at the NCAA Championships.

After falling in the round of 16 at 65kg, McKee battled back through the consolation bracket with seven straight wins, including a 12-1 victory against Patricio Lugo of the Hawkeye Wrestling Club to clinch his spot in next week’s trials. McKee was a two-time All-American for the Gophers in 2019-20. His younger brother Patrick was a third-place finisher at last week’s NCAA Championships.

The U.S. Olympic Wrestling Trials will be held at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas, next Friday and Saturday, April 2-3.
