SDSU Completes Day 1 of Big 12 Tourney

TULSA, Okla. – Four South Dakota State wrestlers reached the semifinals at the Big 12 Wrestling Championship Saturday, but all fell short in their bids to reach the finals during competition in the evening session at BOK Center.

In all, five Jackrabbit wrestlers remain in contention for top-five placings and potential berths in the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships later this month.

Sophomore Clay Carlson came the closest in his bid to reach the finals, dropping a 3-2 decision to second-seeded Dom Demas in their semifinal match. Carlson, seeded third at 141 pounds, opened with an 8-4 decision over Kaden Gfeller of Oklahoma State and then hung on for a 5-3 decision over sixth-seeded Chris Sandoval of Northern Colorado in the quarterfinals during the opening session of the day.

At 133 pounds, third-seeded Zach Price bounced back from an opening-round upset at the hands of Oklahoma’s Tony Madrigal, 4-3, to stay alive with two wins in Saturday night’s wrestlebacks. First, Price won an 8-5 decision over Jared Van Vleet of Air Force to avenge a loss earlier this season, then the sophomore from Johnston, Iowa, earned a 5-3 overtime decision over Utah Valley’s Ty Smith.

Also falling victim to an upset was top-seeded 197-pounder Tanner Sloan. After notching a 17-0 second-period technical fall over Air Force’s Kayne Hutchison in his first match, Sloan couldn’t get on track against fourth-seeded A.J. Ferrari of Oklahoma State in the semifinals. Ferrari came up with a pair of reversals en route to a 7-1 victory over Sloan, who suffered his first loss of the season after 14 wins in a row.

Senior 125-pounder Danny Vega also saw a long winning streak end in the semifinals, but not before his streak reached 13 matches with a pin of West Virginia’s Killian Cardinale in the quarterfinals. Vega, seeded fifth, dropped an 8-6 decision to top-seeded Brody Teske of Northern Iowa in the semifinals.

Rounding out the Jackrabbits’ semifinalists was redshirt freshman Cade DeVos at 157 pounds. Like Sloan and Vega, the fourth-seeded DeVos received a first-round bye and later won his quarterfinal match with a 9-4 decision over fifth-seeded Jacob Wright of Wyoming. He dropped an 8-2 decision to top-seeded David Carr of Iowa State in the semifinals.

Sophomore 174-pounder Cade King was the only other Jackrabbit to win a contested match on Saturday, posting a 20-3 technical fall over Fresno State’s Zack Gonzalez in the wrestlebacks. He began the day with a 3-1 loss to second-seeded Hayden Hastings and was eliminated by Dustin Plott of Oklahoma State, 8-1, later in the wrestlebacks.

SDSU is eighth among 12 squads in the team standings with 52 points. Oklahoma leads the way with 107 points, followed by Wyoming with 97 and Oklahoma with 96 points.

Competition resumes at 10 a.m. Sunday, with consolation rounds that conclude with matches for third, fifth and seventh place.
