Steveson Advances to Big Ten Title Match

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA – Gable Steveson will wrestle for his second league title as the Gopher wrestling team sits in eighth place following day one of the Big Ten Championships in University Park, Pa. Steveson will face No. 2 seed Mason Parris of Michigan in a rematch of last year’s heavyweight final on Sunday at 3 p.m.

Steveson began the day with a 19-4 technical fall against No. 8 Tate Orndorff of Ohio State in the quarterfinals. He extended his win streak to 28 with a win by medical forfeit against No. 5 Christian Lance of Nebraska. Steveson defeated Parris, 8-6, in last year’s Big Ten final in the pair’s only meeting.

Steveson was joined in the semifinals by Michael Blockhus and Brayton Lee, but the sophomores suffered overtime defeats. Blockhus handed No. 3 Griffin Parriott of Purdue his first loss of the season with a 4-1 decision in the 149-pound quarterfinals. In the semifinals, No. 7 Ridge Lovett earned an escape and kept Blockhus on the mat for 30 seconds in the first tiebreaker to seal a 2-1 win. Blockhus will meet No. 10 Graham Rooks in the consolation semifinals.

Lee suffered his second overtime loss of the season to No. 2 Kaleb Young of Iowa in the 157-pound semifinal. Following two sudden victory periods, Young escaped with a 3-2 decision thanks to 23 seconds of riding time in the tiebreakers. Lee will face No. 5 Brady Berge of Penn State in the consolation semifinals as he looks to improve on last year’s fourth-place showing.

Patrick McKee, Boo Dryden, Jake Allar and Owen Webster will wrestle for seventh place tomorrow. After being upset in the first round, McKee rebounded with back-to-back pins in the 125-pound consolation bracket. Dryden upset fifth-seed Jack Medley, 8-6, before falling in the consolation quarterfinals at 133 pounds. Allar advanced in the 174-pound consolation bracket with a pin of No. 7 Jackson Turley of Rutgers. Webster finished 2-2 on the day but fell in the 184-pound consolation quarterfinals by a 3-2 decision against No. 9 Nelson Brands of Iowa.

Three Gophers remain in contention for ninth-place finishes. Marcos Polanco (141), Andrew Sparks (165) and Garrett Joles (197) will look to advance in wrestlebacks.

The 2021 Big Ten Championships resume at 11 a.m. on Sunday morning with consolation semifinals and seventh-place matches. The title matches, along with third- and fifth-place bouts, will begin at 3 p.m. and air live on BTN.
