Mankato, Minn. — A trio of Minnesota State wrestlers will travel to St. Louis, Mo., to take part in the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships starting this Friday and concluding Saturday evening.
The three wrestlers representing the Mavericks at the tournament include Trenton McManus, Kyle Rathman and Trevor Turriff.
All three individuals qualified for last year’s national championship tournament, which was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
McManus, a senior from Adams, Wis., who enters the tournament seeded seventh, won three straight matches to claim the 125 title at the regional championship to qualify for this year’s national tournament. McManus is 8-1 on the year and owns a 31-12 career record.
Rathman is undefeated on the year and enters the national championship seeded second. A senior from Apple Valley, Minn., Rathman placed seventh at the national championships to earn All-America honors as a sophomore in 2018-19. He went 3-0 at the regional tournament in claiming the title at 149 lbs this year. He stands 9-0 for 2020-21 and owns a career mark of 66-19.
Turriff punched his ticket to the national championship tournament by claiming the regional championship at 174-pounds. The junior from De Pere, Wis., is seeded second at nationals and enters the championship owning a 9-0 record on the season. Turriff is 41-13 for his three-year collegiate career.
Session I is set to begin at 12:00 p.m. Friday which includes the first round matches along with championship quarterfinals and two rounds of consolation action. Session II begins Saturday starting at noon with the championship semifinals, third round consolation, consolation semis, and third, fifth and seventh-place matches. The championships finals start at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday.
