MOORHEAD — For the third time in six years, Minnesota State University Moorhead will host the Super Region V wrestling tournament. The NCAA announced MSUM was awarded the 2022 tournament bid on Monday.
MSUM also hosted the Super Region 5 tournament in 2017 and 2019.
“We are excited to once again be given the opportunity to host a NCAA Championship,” MSUM interim athletic director Chad Markuson said. “Dragon Athletics takes great pride in hosting both NSIC and NCAA Championships. Our partnership with Fargo-Moorhead Sports Commission allows us to host at high level championship and provide a great student-athlete experience.”
The one-day event will be held on Feb. 26, 2022 at Nemzek Fieldhouse.
MSUM also partnered with the Fargo-Moorhead Sports Commission to host the NSIC Swim and Dive Championships this past February at the Hulbert Aquatic Center in West Fargo.
“We are excited to once again support Dragon Athletics’ efforts to bring elite events such as the NCAA to our community,” said Kali Mork, director of sports for the Fargo-Moorhead Convention and Visitors Bureau. “Partnerships such as this are vital to moving the needle forward in sports for the FM area.”
The region consists of nine schools from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference — MSUM, Minot State, UMary, Northern State, St. Cloud State, Minnesota State-Mankato, Upper Iowa, Southwest Minnesota State and Augustana, along with Wisconsin-Parkside.
“We are excited to host another NCAA Regional Wrestling Tournament at MSU Moorhead,” MSUM head wrestling coach Kris Nelson said. “MSUM hosted during the 2016-2017 and 2018-2019 seasons and our administration and athletic staff has done a great job in the past hosting the Regional Tournament at Nemzek Hall. I have no doubt that they will do an exceptional job for the 2021-2022 tournament. It is great to bring this tournament to the Fargo-Moorhead area and gives the community an opportunity to watch some of the best college wrestling in all of NCAA DII.”
