Augsburg’s Shilson wins pair of national titles in Texas

IRVING, Texas — Augsburg University women’s wrestler Emily Shilson (SO, Maple Grove, Minn./Mounds View HS) won another pair of amateur wrestling national titles over the weekend, claiming the 50-kilogram (110 pounds) titles at the USA Wrestling/United World Wrestling Women’s Junior Nationals on Friday, and the USAW/UWW U23 Women’s World Team Trials on Sunday, both at the Irving Convention Center.

Shilson will represent the United States at the United World Wrestling Junior World Championships in Ufa, Russa, Aug. 16-22, and at the UWW U23 World Championships in Belgrade, Serbia on Nov. 1-7. It’s the second straight time that Shilson will represent the USA at the UWW U23 World Championships, after winning the 2019 American crown. She went 1-2 in competition at the 2019 world meet in Budapest, Hungary. She also won the 2020 U23 Nationals and UWW Junior Nationals in November in Omaha, Neb.

Shilson was among a group of six Auggies competing in Texas over the weekend. Marlynne Deede (SO, Springville, Utah/Springville HS) placed third at the UWW Junior Nationals at 72 kg (159 pounds), while finishing sixth in the field at the UWW U23 World Team Trials. At 57 kg (126 pounds), Gabby Skidmore (SO, Spooner, Wis./Cumberland HS) placed fourth, while Vayle-Rae Baker (SO, Benton, Pa./Wyoming Seminary HS) finished sixth. Hannah Michael (SO, La Porte City, Iowa/Union HS) competed at 50 kg at both events, while Sierra Brown Ton (JR, Allen, Texas/Einstein HS) competed at the U23 meet at 67 kg (148 pounds).

Shilson won all 13 of her matches during the two days of competition in Texas, with five pins and eight technical falls (technical superiorities). She outscored her opponents by a 64-6 margin in her six wins on Friday, and held a 50-3 advantage in her five wins on Sunday. She claimed four sub-60-second technical falls, including a 17-second, 10-0 victory on Sunday.

In the best 2-of-3 finals at the Junior meet on Friday, Shilson claimed a pair of pins over Samara Chavez of Texas, the No. 1-ranked high school wrestler nationally at 112 pounds and a King (Tenn.) recruit, winning in 4:04 and 5:04. On Sunday, she scored two wins over Menlo (Calif.) junior Alleida Martinez, a 2019 NAIA and Women’s Collegiate Wrestling Association national titlist, by a 12-2 (4:54) technical fall and a 3:10 pin.

The 2018 UWW Cadet World titlist and 2018 Youth Olympic Games champion at 43 kg (95 pounds), Shilson has been a two-time winner of National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling Championships (NCWWC) at 109 pounds and was the national titlist at the 2020 WCWA national tournament during her collegiate years. She finished 8-0 in her sophomore collegiate season at Augsburg, with all eight wins coming by bonus-point margins (six technical falls, two pins). She is 22-0 in her collegiate career, with 12 technical falls and eight pins. Both Shilson and Deede competed at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials earlier this spring.

Deede finished in third place at 72 kg at the UWW Junior Nationals, going 4-1 on Friday with two technical falls and a 20-second pin. Both of her technical falls were under 90 seconds in length, including a 35-second, 10-0 win. At the U23 World Team Trials on Sunday, Deede went 3-3 with a pair of first-period pins.

Skidmore went 4-2 to finish fourth at 57 kg at the U23 World Team Trials, with a pair of sub-minute pins, while Baker went 3-1 at 57 kg, but suffered injury defaults to finish sixth. Brown Ton went 3-2 at 62 kg with a pin and technical fall at the U23 World Team Trials, while Michael went 0-4 over the weekend at the two meets.

Earlier this month, Baker won the 57 kg title at the UWW Senior Nationals in Coralville, Iowa, while Brown Ton finished third at 62 kg and Deede finished fourth at 76 kg.
