MANHEIM, Pa. – North Dakota State was ranked No. 2 in the 2021 NWCA Scholar All-America team standings announced Thursday, May 20, by the National Wrestling Coaches Association.
NDSU’s 3.5440 team grade-point average was second only to Long Island’s 3.5584. Cleveland State was third (3.5331), Stanford fourth (3.5010) and George Mason (3.4818) rounded out the top five the 30 teams recognized.
Bison freshman 133 Kellyn March, sophomore 157 Jared Franek, sophomore 174 Austin Brenner and junior heavyweight Brandon Metz were honored as NWCA Scholar All-Americans.
Franek and Metz, both two-time recipients of the award, were two of NDSU’s four NCAA national championship qualifiers. Franek was the Big 12 runner-up at 157 pounds and Metz finished in fifth place at heavyweight. March and Brenner were seventh-place finishers at the Big 12 Championships.
