ST. CLOUD, MINN. – The St. Cloud State University wrestling team had no shortage of things to celebrate at the Annual Team Banquet Friday evening. The Huskies won their third consecutive national championship and saw a slew of wrestlers find individual success throughout the 2020-21 season. During the banquet, Steve Costanzo announced the 2020-21 team award winners, including the Dean Weisman Wrestler of the Year award.
Kameron Teacher (Grove City, Ohio / Central Crossing) closed out his oustanding senior season with St. Cloud State by earning his third wrestler of the year honor, as he was named the Dean Weisman Wrestler of the Year at Friday’s banquet. Teacher already took home the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) and National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) DII Wrestler of the Year awards earlier this year, and additionally won team awards for most individual wins, most points and most bonus point wins Friday night.
Brock Schlough (Menomonie, Wis. / Boyceville) was named the Scholar Wrestler of the Year for maintaining a GPA of 4.0 during the season. The Gary Boman Most Improved Wrestler Award went to Jackson Held (Royalton, Minn. / Royalton) and Spencer Miller (Browerville, Minn. / Staples-Motley), and Held also earned the Iron Man of the Year award.
Like Held, Noah Ryan (Mantorville, Minn. / Kasson-Mantorville) took home two awards, as he was named the Jim & Dave Hazewinkel Tough Man of the Year Award and, along with Garrett Vos (Waconia, Minn. / Waconia), the “Jim Sundgren” Most Courageous Wrestler Award. The SCSU Wrestling Buzz Saw Award went to senior Riley Vanik (Sugar Grove, Ill. / Kaneland), whle the Jack Gause Huskies Wrestling Hall of Fame Award went to assistant coach Brady Wilson.
A handful of fans and faculty members were also recognized Friday night for their dedication to Huskies wrestling, along with alumni Travis Holt, who received the team’s Alumni Achievement Award.
