The Guillotine 2021 Academic All-State Wrestlers

The 2021 edition of The Guillotine Academic All-State honorees features 30 first-team members, 30 second-team members, 30 third-team members, and 44 honorable mention wrestlers.

One hundred thirty-eight total wrestlers, representing 67 teams, were submitted this season. Points were tallied based on current season varsity wins, current season state tournament placement, and cumulative high school GPA.

Everyone on the first team placed fourth or higher at state this year, including 20 champions and three runners-up. First team members have an average of 34.1 season wins, an average season win-percentage of 96%, and an average GPA of 3.81.

Thirteen honorees had a perfect 4.0 GPA: Christian Noble of Big Lake, Luke Mertens of Blue Earth Area, Gabe Wagner of Brainerd, Michael Ude of Fridley, Nick Novak of New Prague, Logan Grove of Osakis, Jack Fudge of Perham, Alex McPhee of Proctor/Hermantown, Brandon Zuniga of Thief River Falls, Zack Chen of Trinity School at River Ridge, Will Howell of Trinity School at River Ridge, Thomas Nicklaus of Trinity School at River Ridge, and Torrey Carlson of United North Central.

Twelve honorees finished as undefeated 2021 state champions: Christian Noble, Brandon Ross of Caledonia/Houston, Jaxson Rohman of Fairmont/Martin County West, Payton Handevidt of Jackson County Central, Bennett Berge of Kasson-Mantorville, Tyson Meyer of Minnewaska Area, Blake West of Shakopee, Drayden Morton of Sibley East, Derek Steele of Sibley East, Quayin Short of Simley, Bennett Tabor of Simley, and Cael Swensen of Wayzata.

Repeat Guillotine first-team members are Daniel Erlandson of Breckenridge, Brody Ullyott of Detroit Lakes, Jaxson Rohman, Gabe Nagel of Little Falls, Blake West, Derek Steele, Ryan Sokol of Simley, Bennett Tabor, Cael Berg of Simley, Roman Rogotzke of Stillwater Area, Cael Swensen, and Kade Sammons of Windom/Mountain Lake.

First Team

Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa-Walker-Bents

Walker Bents, 126 pounds
Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa, 11th

Walker is a state champion and two-time state finalist. He won the 106-pound Class A title as a sophomore in 2020. Walker was runner-up at 126 pounds in 2021 as a junior. He placed third at 106 pounds as a freshman. Walker had a season record of 36-3. His current career record is 156-34, including 80 pins. Walker’s GPA is 3.72. Honors and achievements include four-time all-conference, team captain, academic all-conference, and is on the Student Council. Walker is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to continue his wrestling career in college. Walker’s parents are Nicholas and Kristine, and his coach is Jack Mueller.


Big-Lake-Christian-Noble

Christian Noble, 120 pounds
Big Lake, 11th

Christian is a two-time state champion and a three-time placewinner. He won the Class AA 120-pound title in 2021 as a junior and the 113-pound title as a sophomore. He placed third at 106 pounds as a freshman. Christian finished his season undefeated with 27 wins. His current career record is 132-7 (95 win %), including 87 pins. Christian’s GPA is 4.0. Honors and achievements include four-time Mississippi Eight All-Conference Wrestler, Mississippi Eight Academic All-Conference (Wrestling/Track/CC), Mississippi Eight All-Conference for Cross Country and Track and Field, and 2021 MWCA Academic All-State. Future plans are to continue his wrestling career in college. Christian’s parents are Alison and Andy, and his coach is Ryan Prom.


Blue-Earth-Max-Ehrich

Max Ehrich, 160 pounds
Blue Earth Area, 12th

Max is a two-time state placewinner. He finished third at 160 pounds in 2021 in Class A as a senior. He placed fourth at 160 pounds as a junior. Max had an impressive season record of 33-2. He ended his high school career with a record of 153-48, including 55 pins. Max’s GPA is 3.9. Honors and achievements include two-time section champion, three-time captain, and all-conference in wrestling and football. Future plans are to attend South Dakota State and major in Ag. Business. Max’s parents are Shawn and Mary, and his coach is Randy Wirtjes.


Blue-Earth-Luke-Mertens

Luke Mertens, 285 pounds
Blue Earth Area, 12th

Luke placed fourth at state in 2021 at 285 pounds in Class A as a senior. He was a state qualifier at 195 pounds as a junior. Luke had a season record of 32-3. He ended his high school career with a record of 62-31, including 27 pins. Luke’s GPA is 4.0. Honors and achievements include team captain, two-time all-conference, MSHSL Triple ‘A’ Award winner, 29 ACT, All-District in football, District Linemen of the Year, and football team captain. Future plans are to play football at Wisconsin-Stout and major in mechanical engineering. Luke’s parents are Kevin and Diana, and his coach is Randy Wirtjes.


Brainerd-Gabe-Wagner

Gabe Wagner, 145 pounds
Brainerd, 11th

Gabe placed third at state in 2021 at 145 pounds in Class AAA. It was his first state tournament appearance. Gabe had a season record of 35-7. His current career record is 95-31, including 47 pins. Gabe’s GPA is 4.0. Honors and achievements include section third place as a sophomore. Gabe is an AP student, Honor Grad Candidate, and is on the A honor roll. Future plans are to continue at Brainerd High School next season. Gabe’s parents are Marty and Christina, and his coach is Mikkey White.


Breckenridge-Daniel-Erlandson

Daniel Erlandson, 220 pounds
Breckenridge, 12th

Daniel is a three-time state entrant and three-time placewinner. He was the Class A 220-pound runner-up this year. He placed fourth at 220 pounds as a junior and sixth at 195 pounds as a sophomore. Daniel had an impressive season record of 27-2. He ended his high school career with a record of 134-34, including 83 pins. Daniel’s GPA is 3.92. Honors and achievements include 2020 team MVP and hardest worker awards, 2020 MWCA Academic All-State, 2020 Guillotine Academic All-State, all-conference in football, Mathletes Team captain, and ExCel Award winner junior year. Daniel is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to play football at the University of Jamestown and study Pre-Physical Therapy with a minor in leadership. Daniel’s parents are Eric and Patti, and his coaches are Tom Haire and his father.


Caledonia-Brandon-Ross

Brandon Ross, 120 pounds
Caledonia/Houston, 11th

Brandon is a state champion and two-time state finalist. He won the Class A 120-pound title in 2021 as a junior and was the 120-pound runner-up as a sophomore. Brandon finished his season undefeated with 31 wins. His current career record is 101-16, including 38 pins. Brandon’s GPA is 3.84. Honors and achievements include all-conference freshman year, first-team all-conference sophomore year, Rochester Post Bulletin All-Area Team freshman and sophomore year, A/B Honor Roll 9th-11th grade, and class ranking of 13 out of 69. Future plans are to attend a four-year college and wrestle. Brandon’s parents are Jeff and Tina, and his coach is Shay Mahoney.


Detroit-Lakes-Brody-Ullyott

Brody Ullyott, 145 pounds
Detroit Lakes, 12th

Brody is a two-time state placewinner. He finished third at 145 pounds in 2021 in Class AA as a senior and was runner-up at 138 pounds as a junior. Brody was a state qualifier at 113 pounds as a freshman. Brody had a season record of 29-4. He ended his high school career with a record of 156-55, including 60 pins. Brody’s GPA is 3.97. Honors and achievements include three-time all-conference, three-time Section 8AA Academic All-Star, MWCA and Section 8AA Scholarship recipient, Mid State Conference MVP, and team captain. Future plans are to attend college and major in wildlife biology/natural resources. Brody’s parents are Rob and Diane, and his father coaches him.


Fairmont-Jaxson-Rohman

Jaxson Rohman, 126 pounds
Fairmont/Martin County West, 12th

Jaxson is a two-time state champion, four-time finalist, and rare six-time placewinner. He won the Class AA 126-pound title this year and the 113-pound title as a freshman. Jaxson was runner-up at 120 pounds as a sophomore and at 106 pounds as an eighth-grader. He also placed third at 120 pounds as a junior and sixth at 106 pounds as a seventh-grader. Jaxson finished his season undefeated with 37 wins. He ended his high school career with a record of 264-18 (93.6 win %), including 104 pins. Jaxson’s GPA is 3.84. Honors and achievements include MSHSL Triple ‘A’ Award candidate. Jaxson is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to attend Augustana University and major in nursing. He plans to continue his wrestling career in college as well. Jaxson’s parents are Steve and Jamie, and his coach is Adam Williamson.


Forest-Lake-Derrick-Cardinal

Derrick Cardinal, 132 pounds
Forest Lake, 12th

Derrick is a four-time state champion and five-time state placewinner. He won the Class AAA 132-pound title this year, the 126-pound title as a junior, the 120-pound title as a sophomore, and the 113-pound title as a freshman. Derrick also placed fifth at 106 pounds as an eighth-grader. Derrick had an impressive season record of 38-1. He ended his high school career with a record of 240-30, including 109 pins. Derrick’s GPA is 3.97. Honors and achievements include MWCA Mr. Minnesota of Wrestling, Minnesota Christmas Tournament champion, and two-time MWCA Academic All-State team member. Future plans are to wrestle and major in exercise science at South Dakota State University. Derrick’s parents are Tim and Merilee, and his coach is Joe Kunshier.


Jackson-County-Central-Kie-Anderson

Kie Anderson, 113 pounds
Jackson County Central, 11th

Kie placed third at state in 2021 at 113 pounds in Class A. It was his first state tournament appearance. Kie had a season record of 38-4. His current career record is 51-13, including 17 pins. Kie’s GPA is 3.81. Honors and achievements include 2021 Knowledge Bowl state participant, A-Honor Roll since 7th grade, National History Bee contestant in seventh grade and a state contestant in eighth grade, class vice-president, five-year member of Student Council. He has also earned state achievements in FFA and 4H. Kie is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to pursue a degree in the areas of chemistry, plant genetics, or agriculture. He is currently thinking about South Dakota State. He may also be interested in joining their wrestling or cross country teams. Kie’s parents are Ron and Sara, and his coach is Nate Hanson.


Jackson-County-Central-Payton-Handevidt

Payton Handevidt, 152 pounds
Jackson County Central, 11th

Payton is a two-time state champion and a three-time placewinner. He won the Class A 152-pound title in 2021 as a junior and the 145-pound title as a sophomore. He placed sixth at 120 pounds as a freshman. Payton finished his season undefeated with 42 wins. His current career record is 157-29, including 85 pins. Payton’s GPA is 3.67. Honors and achievements include three-time all-conference, wrestled in MN#1 in 2020, and was on the Minnesota Cadet team in 2018 and 2019. Future plans are to continue his wrestling career in college. Payton’s parents are Chris and Tammy, and his coach is Nate Hanson.


Kasson-Mantorville-Bennett-Berge

Bennett Berge, 182 pounds
Kasson-Mantorville, 11th

Bennett is a four-time state champion in four state appearances. He won the Class AA 182-pound title this year, the 170-pound title as a sophomore, the 160-pound title as a freshman, and the 138-pound title as an eighth-grader. Bennett finished his season undefeated with 29 wins. His current career record is 189-25, including 59 pins. Bennett’s GPA is 3.75. Honors and achievements include cadet freestyle national champion, Super 32 finalist, and MWCA Academic All-State. Future plans are to wrestle for a DI program. Bennett’s parents are Kevin and Cheri, and his coach is Jamie Heidt.


Little-Falls-Gabe-Nagel

Gabe Nagel, 182 pounds
Little Falls, 12th

Gabe is a state champion and three-time state finalist. He won the 160-pound Class AAA title as a sophomore in 2019. Gabe was runner-up at 182 pounds in 2021 as a senior and at 170 pounds as a junior. He was a state qualifier at 145 pounds as a freshman. Gabe had an impressive season record of 33-1. He ended his high school career with a record of 214-32, including 131 pins. Gabe’s GPA is 3.98. Honors and achievements include Little Falls career wins and pins record-holder and 2020 Little Falls High School Boy of the Month. Future plans are to attend the University of Minnesota and wrestle for The Gophers. Gabe’s parents are Todd and Jenae, and his coach is Mike Hendrickson.


Minneota-Jonah-Gruenes

Jonah Gruenes, 152 pounds
Minneota, 11th

Jonah placed third at state in 2021 at 152 pounds in Class A as a junior. He was a state qualifier at 138 pounds as a sophomore. Jonah had a season record of 35-3. His current career record is 117-42, including 38 pins. Jonah’s GPA is 3.96. Honors and achievements include Southwest District All-Academic Football in 2021. Future plans are to attend a four-year college and possibly wrestle. Jonah’s parents are Jennifer and Mark, and his coach is Matt Myrvik.


Minnewaska-Tyson-Meyer

Tyson Meyer, 182 pounds
Minnewaska Area, 12th

Tyson is a three-time state champion. He won the Class A 182-pound title this year, the 170-pound title as a junior, and the 170-pound title as a sophomore. He was also a state qualifier at 160 pounds as a freshman and at 160 pounds as an eighth-grader. Tyson finished his season undefeated with 36 wins. He ended his high school career with a record of 227-27, including 108 pins. Tyson’s GPA is 3.56. Honors and achievements include school career win record holder, team captain, and Minnewaska football all-time leading rusher. Tyson is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to wrestle at St. Cloud State University and pursue a degree in business. Tyson’s parents are Cole and Mindy, and his coach is Justin Viss.


New-Prague-Nick-Novak

Nick Novak, 145 pounds
New Prague, 12th

Nick is a state champion, two-time finalist, and four-time placewinner. He won the Class AAA 145-pound title this year as a senior. Nick was runner-up at 138 pounds as a junior. He also placed fourth at 120 pounds as a sophomore and sixth at 106 pounds as a freshman. Nick had an impressive season record of 30-1. He ended his high school career with a record of 169-17 (90.9 win %), including 71 pins. Nick’s GPA is 4.0. Honors and achievements include 2nd place at the 2020 and 2017 Rumble on the Red Tournament, 3rd at the 2018 Bi-State Classic, and 4th at the 2019 Minnesota Christmas Tournament. Future plans are to wrestle for St. Cloud State University. Nick’s parents are Dan and Julie, and his coach is Dan Wagner.


Owatonna-Landen-Johnson

Landen Johnson, 160 pounds
Owatonna, 11th

Landen is a state champion and two-time state finalist. He won the Class AAA 160-pound title in 2021 as a junior. Landen was the 152-pound runner-up as a sophomore. He placed sixth at 138 pounds as a freshman and was a state qualifier as a seventh-grader. Landen had an impressive season record of 35-1. His current career record is 188-36, including 114 pins. Landen’s GPA is 3.79. Honors and achievements include MWCA Academic All-State Wrestler and Owatonna High School record holder for most career pins. Future plans are to go to college to wrestle and get a four-year degree. Landen’s father is Daniel Johnson, and his coach is Adam Woitalla.


Perham-Jack-Fudge

Jack Fudge, 152 pounds
Perham, 12th

Jack is a two-time state placewinner. He finished third at 152 pounds in 2021 in Class AA as a senior and was third at 152 pounds as a junior. Jack was a state qualifier at 145 pounds as a sophomore and at 138 pounds as a freshman. Jack had a season record of 33-3. He ended his high school career with a record of 203-22 (90.2 win %), including 57 pins. Jack’s GPA is 4.0. Honors and achievements include three-time academic all-section. Future plans are to attend NDSU to pursue a degree in accounting. Jack’s parents are Angie Werner and Chris Fudge, and his coach is Dave Vetsch.


Shakopee-Blake-West

Blake West, 113 pounds
Shakopee, 12th

Blake is a two-time state champion and a three-time placewinner. He won the Class AAA 113-pound title in 2021 as a senior and the 113-pound title as a junior. He placed fifth at 106 pounds as a freshman. Blake finished his season undefeated with 33 wins. He ended his high school career with a record of 172-6 (96.6 win %), including 98 pins. Blake’s GPA is 3.9. Honors and achievements include two-time MWCA Academic All-State, team captain, Clash Duals Scholar-Athlete Award, 2020 Class AAA State All-Tournament Team, 2019 Fargo Freestyle Finalist, 2019 USA Wrestling Folkstyle Nationals Champion, 2018 Rumble on the Red Champion, and 2018 Minnesota Christmas Tournament Champion. Future plans are to wrestle at Northern Illinois University and attend medical school. Blake’s parents are Jack and Reagan, and his coach is Marcus LeVesseur.


Sibley-East-Drayden-Morton

Drayden Morton, 132 pounds
Sibley East, 11th

Drayden is a three-time state champion. He won the Class A 132-pound title this year, the 120-pound title as a sophomore, and the 106-pound title as a freshman. He was also a state qualifier at 106 pounds as an eighth-grader. Drayden finished his season undefeated with 34 wins. His current career record is 141-14 (91 win %), including 59 pins. Drayden’s GPA is 3.7. Honors and achievements include three-time all-conference and MWCA Academic All-State. Future plans are to wrestle after high school. Drayden’s parents are Dan and DeAnn, and his coach is Chris Koob.


Sibley-East-Derek-Steele

Derek is a two-time state champion and a three-time finalist. He won the Class A 126-pound title in 2021 as a senior and the 113-pound title as a junior. He was runner-up at 113 pounds as a sophomore and was a state qualifier at 113 pounds as a freshman. Derek finished his season undefeated with 38 wins. He ended his high school career with a record of 178-53, including 81 pins. Derek’s GPA is 3.54. Honors and achievements include three-time all-conference, conference MVP, and two-time MWCA Academic All-State. Future plans are to wrestle at Augsburg. Derek’s parents are Donovan and Susie, and his coach is Chris Koob.


Simley-Cael-Berg

Cael Berg, 160 pounds
Simley, 12th

Cael is a two-time state champion, three-time finalist, and five-time state placewinner. He won the Class AA 160-pound title this year, the 138-pound title as a junior, and was runner-up at 138 pounds as a sophomore. Cael also placed fifth at 126 pounds as a freshman and fourth at 106 pounds as an eighth-grader. Cael had an impressive season record of 33-1. He ended his high school career with a record of 213-38, including 75 pins. Cael’s GPA is 3.94. Honors and achievements include three-time Fargo All-American, two-year team captain, member of three state championship teams, three-time Academic letter-winner, 2020 first-team Guillotine Academic All-State, 2021 MWCA Academic All-State, and Math tutor. Future plans are to wrestle at Harvard University and pursue a degree in computer science or economics. Cael’s parents are Mark and Julia, and his coach is Will Short.


Simley-Chase-DeBlaere

Chase DeBlaere, 138 pounds
Simley, 11th

Chase is a three-time state champion and a four-time state placewinner. He won the Class AA 138-pound title this year, the 126-pound title as a sophomore, and the 120-pound title as a freshman. Chase also placed third at 113 pounds as an eighth-grader. Chase had an impressive season record of 34-1. His current career record is 201-21 (90.5 win %), including 132 pins. Chase’s GPA is 3.5. Honors and achievements include four-time letter winner, four-time all-conference, and Cheeshead Tournament Champion. Future plans are to wrestle at Oregon State University. Chase’s parents are Elicia and Mike, and his coach is Will Short.


Simley-Ryan-Sokol

Ryan Sokol, 152 pounds
Simley, 12th

Ryan is a three-time state champion and a five-time state placewinner. He won the Class AA 152-pound title this year, the 145-pound title as a junior, and the 132-pound title as a sophomore. Ryan also placed third at 113 pounds as an eighth-grader and fifth at 106 pounds as a seventh-grader. Ryan had an impressive season record of 34-1. He ended his high school career with a record of 225-20 (91.8 win %), including 122 pins. Ryan’s GPA is 3.64. Honors and achievements include five-time letter winner, five-time all-conference, two-time Minnesota Christmas Tournament champion, Cheesehead Tournament champion, Cadet Freestyle National champion, and UWW 17 National Champion and World Team member. Future plans are to wrestle at Cornell University. Ryan’s parents are Estelle and Joe, and his coach is Will Short.


Simley-Bennett-Tabor

Bennett Tabor, 285 pounds
Simley, 12th

Bennett is a two-time state champion and a three-time placewinner. He won the Class AA 285-pound title in 2021 as a senior and the 220-pound title as a junior. He placed fourth at 195 pounds as a sophomore. Bennett finished his season undefeated with 35 wins. He ended his high school career with a record of 178-45, including 125 pins. Bennett’s GPA is 3.47. Honors and achievements include five-time letter winner, four-time all-conference, Minnesota Christmas Tournament champion, Independence Iowa Tournament champion, Cheesehead Tournament champion, and Super 32 Tournament champion. Future plans are to wrestle at the University of Minnesota. Bennett’s parents are Barb and Matt, and his coach is Will Short.


Stillwater-Roman-Rogotzke

Roman Rogotzke, 195 pounds
Stillwater Area, 12th

Roman is a two-time state champion and five-time state qualifier. He won the Class AAA 195-pound title this year and the 182-pound title as a junior. Roman was a state qualifier at 152 pounds as a sophomore, 132 pounds as a freshman, and 113 pounds as an eighth-grader. Roman had an impressive season record of 37-1. He ended his high school career with a record of 222-54, including 158 pins. Roman’s GPA is 3.6. Honors and achievements include 158 career pins – 8th all-time, 1,239 team points – 7th all-time, six-time letter winner, and MWCA Academic All-State. Future plans are to attend South Dakota State on a wrestling scholarship and major in Business Economics. Roman’s parents are Perry and Kelly, and his coach is Tim Hartung.


Thief-River-Falls-Brady-Kasprick

Brady Kasprick, 145 pounds
Thief River Falls, 11th

Brady won the 2021 Class AA 145-pound state title as a junior. He was a state qualifier at 138 pounds as a sophomore. Brady had an impressive season record of 36-1. His current career record is 136-32, including 43 pins. Brady’s GPA is 3.98. Honors and achievements include schoolboy dual team for MN/USA, youth wrestling coach, and captain for wrestling. Brady is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to pursue a degree in agriculture or business and ultimately be involved in coaching wrestling at various levels. Brady’s parents are  Brenda and Brian, and his coach is Kenny Geiser.


Wayzata-Cael-Swensen

Cael Swensen, 152 pounds
Wayzata, 12th

Cael is a two-time state champion and a four-time placewinner. He won the Class AAA 152-pound title in 2021 as a senior and the 138-pound title as a junior. Cael placed fifth at 120 pounds as a sophomore and fourth at 106 pounds as a freshman. Cael finished his season undefeated with 39 wins. He ended his high school career with a record of 223-37, including 113 pins. Cael’s GPA is 3.78. Honors and achievements include 5th at Super 32 in 2020, three-time USA Wrestling Greco All-American, 2019 Fargo Junior Nationals Greco runner-up, 702 career takedowns, two-time MWCA Academic All-State, five-time all-conference, and winner at the inaugural MN Who’s #1 dual. Future plans are to continue his academic and wrestling career at South Dakota State this fall. Cael’s parents are Eric and Debra, and his father coaches him.


Windom-Kade-Sammons

Kade Sammons, 138 pounds
Windom/Mountain Lake, 12th

Kade is a two-time state placer winning the 138-pound Class A title in 2021. He placed third at 132 pounds as a junior. Kade had an impressive season record of 34-2. He ended his high school career with a record of 176-51, including 46 pins. Kade’s GPA is 3.68. Honors and achievements include two-time team MVP. Kade also participates in baseball and football. Future plans are to wrestle at Augustana University. Kade’s parents are Josh and Nicole, and his coach is Nick Kulseth and Travis Elg.
